FD Type R

Greetings all, had a look through the site and consider myself truly priveliged have purchased what is obviously an enthusiasts car and to be amongst so many technically knowledgable people.

Anyway I don\'t know if anyone can help, I\'ve just bought an RX-7 efini Type R at auction which has 87km on the clock and was imported from Japan on 01/06/07, probably the reason the guy entered it was due to the fact that, only every now and then it, misbehaves and starts to run very roughly, especially when you accelerate from about 2000 revs.

Whether it\'s coincidence or not I don\'t know but on start up if I let it idle for a few minutes before setting off it appears to be fine.

When its running well it IS truly superb and like lightening, I\'ve had a few cars but the performance from this eclipses absolutely everything that\'s gone before. Why did no one tell me about the RX-7 before :Hammer

I\'ve just ordered a single wire lambda sensor as a starting point in trying to eliminate my little problem but will it need to be programmed to the ECU after fitting? Apologies if that sounds like a question from a nugget but I have truly fallen for this car :InLove and just want to get it right

Other than the lambda sensor does anyone else have any suggestions as to what might be causing the problem, pleeeeease!

As you can probably see from the engine pics I intially had a bit of a coolant problem but this now seems to be resolved

welcome nice looking motor, try easy cheapest way out change plugs could be old/fouled up.do you know if standard or apexi ecu fitted ? keep an eye on coolant levels & water temperature - only problem is standard gauge not over reliable

You should do this anyway mate, the engine needs warming up before blasting off.

Although if the car is warm when you start it (eg you have driven somewhere, popped into a shop etc and starting it again) then it shouldnt do it.

But I always let mine warm up from cold, takes about 3 mines before driving anywhere and I give it about 30 secs when it is warm.

Nice looking car there mate !!

Thanks for the advice gmogle, Pete you\'ve got mail

HI FD TYPE R, did you eventually solve your problem with the car running rough intermittently?, reason i ask is cos i am experiencing identical problems with my fd & if you solved it i\'d really like to know how. cheers.:Tongue1

is it just me or is the AST and filler neck caps the wrong way round ? or maybe i\'m remembering it wrong or its mine that is :)

I\'ve just bought two new caps, both with lugs on, both at 0.9bar and both sprung as Carl at Hayward said it doesn\'t really make any difference if there\'s a sprung one in the centre but to answer your question under normal circumstances I believe the unsprung one without lugs usually fits in the centre with the sprung one on the AST

I had a new lambda sensor fitted last week along with the re-connection of the expansion tank hose, the car currently has 7\'s spark plugs fitted at the moment so I am having them replaced with 9\'s next week which seems to be what most people recommend.

To be honest the rough running has only been noticable once since someone advised me to let it idle for a couple of minutes after start up, on the one occasion that it happened I turned the car off, the engine ran for three minutes on the turbo timer after which point I re-started the car, let it idle for 30 seconds, and it was fine.

Don\'t know if it\'s anything to do with the plugs but no doubt I\'ll find out next week once they\'ve been changed, I\'ll let you know if it makes a difference:Thumbs-up

The only other thing that I can think that it might be on my car is it possibly needs re-mapping to run on UK fuel as it only arrived from Japan on the 1st of June this year, that\'ll be the next thing if the plugs don\'t solve it

There i a water temp sensor that tells the ECU when up to temp, if this is faulty the ECU will amke it run very rich as if just started and this can make your symphoms happen.
Change this and I recon it will sort youre problem, no guarentees though.

\'Fraid not Pete, Wrights couldn\'t get it on their ramps due to the bodykit, they asked me to bring it back when the MOT pit was free this coming week, in saying that they\'re supposed to have resolved the water problem but it\'s still losing coolant from somewhere so I\'m considering booking it into WGT and taking it across on my trailer to let Pip have a good look at it
