Air Pump in RX7s ... what is it used for?

someone asked me about the air pump in RXs and i didnt know what to say. why it is used and why do people take it out when they have straight through exhausts (no decat). can it be taken out when the car has the standard exhaust system? would it cause any problems if it was taken out? how is it done?

The air pump feeds air into the cat, so if you remove it while still having a cat you will soon fry it!!
