Is 55mm close enough to work on the flywheel nut?

interloper393

54mm bud for the flywheel, iv heard its a bugger to get off unless you have a impact wrench? if youv got a compressor, a impact wrench is the best tool you`ll ever own lol.. the time n hassle mines saved me is amazing :evillaugh

The answer has got to be yes mate.

I\'ve not tried it but once you get bigger than 30mm, 1 or 2mm oversize works fine.

Many, many people use a 55mm socket for the flywheel nut.

Martiny

thanks guys, its about £12 cheaper for a 55 than a 54.

Make sure you\'ve got something to go even longer than a 60cm breaker as you\'ll need it. It needs huge amounts of torque to tighten it again as well so a scaffold pole is good.

Where in surrey are you mate, if your near guild bish still has my 1m breaker bar.

Just out of interest how much does the nut cost to replace, I ended up just chiseling the darn thing off after it refusing to come off with a socket. I only got my hands on a sheet socket.

thats exactly what i did... and a hammer and a chisel to get it back on and i havent had any issues.

if it is a single hex one Martin I bet you will be just fine. It\'s not a tiny 10mm A/F nut after all :)

and my flywheel nut came off just fine by hand, I made a proper steel bar to stop the flywheel from turning and used a 1" drive breaker bar thats about 2feet long came off with some mild heaving.

the front pulley nut was worse but gave in after a few minutes with my electric impact wrench (240V one ... brilliant tool and really handy)

Martin I may be able to pop round with my \'Snap-on\' impact gun, I\'d have to stay while you do it though incase I need it.
PM me I\'m in woking Mon +Tues till late if any help

Thanks Paul- But do you have the socket - I have ordered but it might take a few days to arrive, maybe Thu/Fri?

ianelvar

I used a 55mm socket which I found in my local tool shop, and a 110 volt impact wrench with 240 volt transformer which I hired from speedy hire for £30 over the weekend.

I made a flywheel stopper just like the mazda SST which I believe one2watch had, and may have gone to somebody else as well. Can\'t remember where it is now, as he may have sent it back, but I\'ll happily lend it out to anyone that needs it if I can find the thing. It fits in a small padded bag so it\'s easy and fairly cheap to mail around.

Sorry mate bigest socket  Ive got in the van are 45mm
