Roundabout-Now

I want to fit new oil coolers, but the prices seem a bit high and I cuurently havemore time than money, so I\'ve been looking at putting my own bits together and fitting it myself.

I traced the hoses yesterday to see where they seem to go. If I traced them right (car wasn\'t jacked up so a bit tricky following them) then it goes like this (standing at front of car). Hose from front right of engine goes to left cooler. Hose out of left cooler goes to right cooler. Hose out of right cooler runs to adapter plate at oil filter. Is this right?

So far I\'ve tracked down a cheap source for 2 x 235mm x 34 row coolers with AN-10 fittings. I know that I also need a thermostat (180F or about 85C) and then the fittings and lines. I figure 4 90 degree adapters to take the feeds off the coolers themselves. 4 SS lines (because of the extra one between adapter and thermo). Couple of brackets to hold oil coolers in place.

Bits I\'m not sure about - to plumb in to engine, need AN-10 to 18mm adapter right? And one other one to go to engine, but not sure of size - anyone know?

I found this site as well last night http://www.scuderiaciriani.com/rx7/oil_cooler_install.html . Only bit that confuses me is on the 7th pic down, where they seem to have just blocked off the connection to front of engine. Why? And the hoses disapper down to a totally different place in that pic than they do on mine, although that\'s probably just because mines a 20B.

Any recommendations for the hose and fitting suppliers?

Any help appreciated.

Hi,

Mocal are top dogs for anything aeroquip / fittings related. Also rally design are cheap for oil coolers best off giving them a call as their respective websites can be confusing.

Hope this helps,

I\'d trawled through the Motec site already, but the prices are high. The rally design site I hadn\'t looked at before, and their I-Core range of fittings are really reasonably priced.

So far the best prices I\'ve had (for what I\'ve sourced so far) are...

Earls 34 row 235mm oil cooler £127.26
Other Brand 34 row 35mm oil cooler £92.78
I-Core SS hose AN10 £18.90 per metre
I-Core 90degree fitting 13.85
I-Core 90degree straight 8.21

Not bad so far, although total is already around £300 excluding vat and I still have to source the thermostat at a good price and the couple of engine fittings.

Sorry but if you think Mocal is expensive, you best give up now and get down the breakers yard.

LMAO, yeah i was also thinking £300 quid doesn\'t sound too bad, considering the kits from Japan are £700 upwards. Maybe Pirtek can help, they do hydraulic piping, equipment etc. They have a website, but not sure of the link.

£300 is the cost (so far) if I avoid Mocal. I wasn\'t saying that £300 (or even £500) was expensive. :D I was talking about the £700+ that a ready-made kit costs. If I went all Mocal, then I wouldn\'t have been far off £700. (Coolers £260 + Fittings £180ish + Hose £55 = £495+vat and that doesn\'t include thermo, engine fittings or brackets)

If I go with the Mocals then it\'s an extra £70 + vat just for the coolers (which are near identical to the ones I\'ve sourced at £93 each). Plus the cost on the fittings was really expensive. A 90 degree bend was like £30 compared to the £13 for an I-Fit. The Hose is £30/m compared to £20/m for I-Fit. If both claim that they hold the same pressures and run at the same temps, why pay for the expensive one?

Mocal/Earls is expensive, compared to the alternatives that are available - although it seemed to take a while to source some of the alternatives. With Mocal you are paying for the brand and a guarantee of quality. There are other, slightly lesser known companys that produce good quality stuff though.

The Rally Design site prices really helped to drop the total - just a shame that most of their online catalogue pages are barely readable scans, so you pretty much have to phone them.

Sorry if I wasn\'t clear - I was trying not to write another one of my llllllloooonnnngggggg posts, but you\'ve gone and done it and made me now. I knew what I meant, even if no-one else ever does :) My powers of clear explanation are legendary - I even had trouble trying to describe what a jubilee clip was today.

Rally design are pretty quick to respond, expecially if they have the stuff in stock. And the oil coolers they sell are actually the very same mocal items, but just alot cheaper ;) I got my old oil cooler kit for my five from them, plus a load of other stuff, so as far as i\'m aware they are very professional and reliable. So yeah as i said before you\'re better off calling them and telling em what you\'re after and i\'m sure they will be able to sort you out.

Have you tried asking for a discount from Mocal/Think Auto? I know tht they DO discount.

I didn\'t know that. I\'ll finish putting the list together of what I need then ask them how much for the lot.
