I am not familiar with Mazda Rotary\'s at all but we are considering using them in a couple cars we are building. We are looking at using 13b-re twin turbos from a 90\'s cosmo. Here are a few questions I have if anyone could answer some are all that would be awesome. I have searched a lot but seem to get conflicting information.

General) I read the exhaust sleeves are small and bigger ones are recommended are these a press in/out part? Where can you purchase the bigger sleeves? If not can they be ported?

Car 1)
Can the Stock ECU be used to manage the twin turbos? I had read it can and also read it can\'t as needs the original auto tranny (this is being mated to a porsche tranny so origanly tranny is out of the question). If it can\'t can somone point me to a thread on how to convert the sequential turbos? or is there an aftermarket EMS that can work with the stock sequential turbos?

Car 2)
We want to keep this naturaly aperated . What parts can be used to convert the twin turbo 13b-re from a cosmo to a na engine?

Thanks for your time.

If you wanted to do an NA, I think the 2nd Gen non turbo engine would be better, as they hold more compression than the turbo engine (From what I\'ve been told). They are already N/A aswell, which could help a little.

Stock ECU is already built to handle Twin Turbo. Doesn\'t matter about the auto tranny, as long as the feedback is the same format to let the ECU know what the gear selector is in (park, drive, reverse, neutral etc), then it should be fine, otherwise the car will not start.

Other questions, I\'ll leave someone else to answer:)

Thanks for the fast reply. The reason we want to keep the same engine for both is we can have a 3rd as a backup and if either of us experience problems at the track we can swap in the backup just bolt on our own parts.

Thought you were somewhere exotic!

Basically if you run the engines with out the turbo, they will work on stock ecu still, but will not detect boost.
You could fit an atermarket ecu that will work too,but quite a bit of wiring will be involved.
What are you planning to put the engines into?

I have a tube frame 914 for the tack only and we are building a Sport Race class car . Seems a lot of people try to discourage us from rotary\'s saying they are extremely fragile. But I kind of have my heart set on one :)

Fragile?! Only if you dont calculate things properly and abuse it :P

Try make a 4 rotor :D

i love that part of the world, hope to move over there in the future. here\'s a pic of the drag strip at mission raceway, taken in may 2005. Stick with your dreams mate there something special. and let us know how it all goes.

I would say if your budget stretchs to a 20b instead then that would be a cool engine n/a (or turbo\'d later).

I think kev yorks just removed his exhaust sleeves on his 20b recently, not sure if he just ported them or junked them altogether.

I reckon he ported them, the exhaust sleeves do have a purpose other than restricting horsepower ( :D) they aid heat transfer from the port to the exhaust manifold and they help cut noise, there was quite a bit done in the states by various people (Paul Yaw was one) on changing their profile from what mazda intended (to cut noise I think) to somthing more performance orientated, they managed to drop spool up times on turbo\'s but there were downsides as I think they ended up with a lot more noise and hot spots on the turbine wheel which did cause problems IIRC.

an Interesting area that gets overlooked I think

As Carl said the stock ECU will work depends though on your porting plans as to how flexible this approach would be. Exhaust sleeves are generally removed when the motor is split but it can be done without opening the motor. They are located by two roll pins into the Ali housing that you can only see in a opened motor but you can drill the housing away over the pins without any detriment to the housing draw out the sleeves and when reassembling use chem metal to relocate the sleeves. This is a no load area of the housing so doesn\'t cause any problems. In my 20b I\'ve replaced the stock sleeves for TII sleeves from some dead housings this way.
The twin turbo set up can be easily modified for non sequential operation its basically the same procedure as with the rew set up and the stock ECU can cope with this but to be honest a aftermarket ECU would be the way to go for more flexibility and once non sequential any of the aftermarket ECU\'s will cope. In N/A form Carl will know if there\'s any straight bolt on exhaust manifolds if not its likely to be a case of fab your own up.

I used TII sleeves Mike the exhaust housing is actually ported perfectly to suit these sleeves then it looks like in the case of the 20b restrictive ones are then dropped in to kill the flow in a attempt to keep the power down. n/a 20b and 300hp is relatively easily attainable without radical porting.

Thanks guys. A 20b is not an option as it moves the car into a higher class :( I just love the simplicity of th design of the engine. I will be going aftermarket ecu for sure and was thinking of dropping the twin turbo setup and just getting an aftermarket turbo. I am only looking to make around 300hp with the turbo charged 13b and then somewhere around 200-220 with the naturally asperated one. the tube frame 914 weighs in at 1800lbs (including driver) right now (with a porsche engine in it) and the sport racer is 1325lbs (with driver) . is the 13b from a cosmo a decent engine to start with to convert to na?
