You will have trouble getting hold of the 7\'s in the UK, so what most of us do is to run 9\'s in both leading and trailing.

Some is having a laugh at your expense

I\'m still running 9s all round, please don\'t pay much more than a tenner a plug for 9s or I might have to take my mate up on his offer to sell them on for him (he only really supplies trade).  You should be OK running 9s all round.

I think I\'ve tracked my warm start problem down to my cat (seems to be the root of all my problems  ) so have no probs running 9s.

Tim_Burgess

Just checked the plugs in the Cosmo - running 9\'s all round. I checked the hand book & it says 5 or 6 leading 8 or 9 trailing. My local Mazda dealer can source 6\'s (in Belgium!!!) for £21+VAT & 9\'s for £11+VAT.

Didn\'t think that was too bad seeing as it was Main dealer prices

Cheers

Tim

Hi Tim,

Yep that sounds right.  I think yours is the 13B?  I know the 20B is the same, it runs plugs that are quite warm as it is more of a cruiser and they need to be hot so that they don\'t carbon-up. (As it generally won\'t rev as hard as an FD).
Thanks,

Update to original Post.

Hi all, thought I would update the original post with the following - due to discussion on another very good thread started by Max.  http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=2474&referrerid=1

Again - I\'m not saying the right plugs (cold or warm) will fix a tuning issue (or otherwise) but they will go a long way to helping.

My update repeated here:
Q. Why run a colder plug for racing?UPDATE TO THIS QUESTION 28/10/2003 - I had kind of covered this by the following answer here, but I thought I had better add in some information about high speed running. For high speed running even with 9\'s in the trailing and leading the conditions will be too extreme for the plugs and engine. If you are doing high speed running quite often then it is recommend you run really cold plugs - even up to 11.5\'s, in all four holes. But these of course can cause problems if you also do a lot of city driving as the cold plugs can foul (also see section below). You can also run 9\'s or 10\'s in the leading and 10\'s or 11\'s in the trailing (consecutively).

A. When you are racing the engine all the time, the engine itself is hotter - therefore it will be cleaning itself already.

You can certainly use 9\'s in all four holes is if you are doing 1/4 mile runs with a modified engine or racing round the track, in both cases the engine will be running far hotter than just normal road/motorway driving. Yes most people run 9\'s and yes they will say they don\'t have any problems but it doesn\'t mean it is correct does it?  It will work and the car will boost fine as the plugs won\'t really make much difference to the actual boost unless they are badly misfiring.

Ultimately you should start-up an engine on warmer plugs if it is stone cold, then when warm put the colder plugs in. You will often see people doing this at a racetrack at the very beginning of the day.
Thanks,

Tim_Burgess

Hi Glenn,

Yes my car is a 13b. I\'ve ordered the plugs & will fit at next oil change. Reckon that the 9\'s all round could be why the first start of the day can be a real bitch!

Cheers

Great thread, was looking for  info on the plugs for my turbo series 4 especially the recommended time to change them over.
Hope you all have a great Xmas

I couldn\'t find the 7\'s on their site:confused: maybe i\'m just being thick? The 9\'s were £11.50 each.

Cheers, Paul:)
