Guys, what the! is it with me and rotarys, Just had a fantasic evening in the company of John Yorke, karting at sittingbourne, 4 days ago, started my yellow RX first time in 6 weeks and it sprung a leak in the rad, A friend of mine Mr Norwich brakedown man said try this stuff as a temp fix, so in goes this blue liquid with little silver bits in and does actually work, then today took her to the car wash, as I was taking her out tonoght and next week want to get her in the body shop. At the wash I found a lovely screw right on the top outside edge of the front tyre, oh crap. Coming home tonight as I changed gear noticed the revs shoot up and thought I had miss judged the throttle clucth thingy, but then 30 miles from home I had to slow down to about 80 as I noticed the engine was cutting in and out. At the traffic lights on my junction There was this awful smell as I said to Chloe, darling appart from the engine revs rising and falling between 1500 and 2500 rpm, we have no brakes. I had to pump the brakes as the servo was not working.
So my burning question is, should I just scrap her, er sorry no, erm what the feck could be wrong, look at the servo and all pipes are on and seem ok. confused:

On a lighter note, on the way there a rarri 550 came out to play, He wont anymore;) :

Gary,

I may get crucified for this but here goes, i have been recently thinking about all the probs the rx\'s have with the engines, and came to the thought that if my engine was to go i would not get a rebuild but look for a alternative engine to replace the rotary.
May sound daft depending on room under the bonnet but i have a feeling the Escort Cosworth engine would fit (block) out goes the air con and stuff in comes the main block and all else.
My main reason for buying a rx was not the fact its a rotary but the fact it looks like the dogs......

What you think, no more petrol worries to an extent and reliability higher as i had a escort cosworth before.

what was the smell?
You said you checked the hoses to the master cylinder,  are they definately not split, this would cause a smell of petrol and a very lumpy idle. And of course no brakes!
400 BHP - 650 KG\'s = 616 BHP Per Ton of Rotary Power

That\'s the way to do it! :Thumbsup!

The engine would sit over the front axle rather then behind it and the weight would be a little higher up.  I suspect that this may completely destroy the FD\'s balance.

PS.  I\'m off looking for some big bits of wood and some nails... :D

Engine revving + no brakes can only mean a leak somewhere between your manifold and the brake servo unit. I have never heard of the brake servo diagphram leaking, but I suppose it could be that, too.

Yes, I also suffer from screws in tyres all the time!

IainT,

It was just a idea really not the final decision but you can see what i\'m getting at?

Not sure if anyone has tried this yet??

Almost certain to be a leak from manifold to servo, in daylight I\'m sure you will find it [wondered where you went last night!]

gsb876: time you got yer coat:p  There\'s a film out this week might be suitable:D  Escort pah..........how can you mention the 2 together.....my gast is flabbered

JY,

Unless you have driven a escort cosworth i dont think you understand the appeal good setup.:)

The problem with the rx7\'s is he reliability we dont all have bundles of cash to rectify all probs we get.

Seriously though just looking at alternatives to rebuilding if required 3k\'s alot of money you could buy a decent engine for 1.5k and improve mileage. Think about it, sometimes we are blinded by loyality;)

a cosworth engine isn\'t that good a choice, they are fairly cheap to tune but the engine block is a boat anchor at best with a decent 16v head bolted to it. There are much better modern engines that have eclipsed the cosworth engine but as usual the UK is stuck in the past so the cosworth "legend" lives on.

I know we are totaly of subject but consider this: cost of different engine+ modifications to engine bay, engine management ect, will certainly cost a great deal more than the 3k for a re-build, plus you would ruin the balance of what is meant to be one of the best handeling cars around
By the way I have owned the same car for more than 3 years and have done over 40k miles without any problems and not had to throw a shed load of money at it.

scooby_si

can we start or transfer this to a "VS" kinda thread ;)
Im useless at technical stuff so wont claim to know owt but hows the brake trouble thing going Gary?

Last time i was at the pod saw at least 5 cossies break down, mostly transmission stuff, so aint that reliable!

ps, was at a ford day so higher ratio of cossies than normal :D

I put a v8 in my \'86 rx7, and it cost me exactly $1500 +$500 for the car. Including motor, rebuild parts, and trans. I did everything myself for less cash then it would have cost to rebuild the motor, and now it has loads of torque and no reliability issues. There where no major problems with fit, a low air cleaner clears the hood, and a relocated sway bar clears the pan.

doesnt even look different. see for youself :rollin
