The previous owner seems to have cross threaded or over tightened the metal dust cap on one of my wheels. I have tried undoing it with a spanner but the rubber valve just turns with it and I\'m worried about damaging the valve. I took the car to a tyre shop and they were reluctant to try because they said the valve is 6mm which they didn\'t have in stock. My wheels are BBS, does anyone know what he means by a 6mm valve, are they rare and where can I get one from?

Thanks.

have you tried to grasp the rubber bit with a pair of mole grips(not too tight)the try to slacken the cap.
dont know what thye mean 6mm the only diiference ive seen between valves is the lentgh so maybe they ment that as the hole sizes are all the same.

grinder

are they alloy valve caps ??

i got some wheels and had the same prob

the alloy corrodes on the inside and at this point they are well and truely stuck on

i spent about 1 hr getting mine off - used the dremel to cut the top of the valve cap off - then down the sides and peeled it off

it wasnt neat but did the trick

i tried what mikeyh said - and it didnt work

Thanks guys. There isn\'t really enough of the valve showing to get hold of, I may see if I can get a super pointy pair of pliers.

Grinder, I think they are alloy as the others were also very tight and when I got them off there was alot of corrosion in the thread. Does that mean the dremel will slice through it quite easily? Bit nervous about slicing through the valve!!

grinder

best way to think about this is that you prob need new valves

so if you cut them off and make a mess - you still new new valves and if you do it neat - then you dont :D

if you take your time they come off OK

Well, I was told that jap spec wheels/vavles have larger diameter vavles which aren\'t used in this country very commonly.

That\'s what I\'m worried about, do I have to replace the valve with a similar type or can I use a uk version?

I might try heating the dust cap too!!:3Confused

mikeyh

ive just changed all 4 valves on my works wheels and used normal valves back in them so unsure about the jap spec wheels.

When you say 6mm is that a measurment you have taken accross the thread diameter?.

I have loads of tiny alloy valves... i need the seat diameter? i bet its 8mm!

If its 8mm send me a stamped addressed envelope and I send you one.

Finally got round to sorting this, did as Grinder said and cut the top off with a dremel, squirted some good old wd40 inside the hole and unscrewed it with a pair of pliers. Won\'t be using alloy dust caps ever again! Thanks for your help everyone.
