rite then , the other day i filled the rex up with water and noticed a leak on the floor . thought id put too much in but it now turns out that my brand new rad that was fitted 4 months ago has popped ??? also noticed a bit of "mayonaise" around my oil filler cap ???? would a water seal have gone in the engine to cause this damage or what ????? please help im scarred :0(

The simple test is to start the Car up from cold and if the Pipes go hard quickly whilst its Cold you have a Problem.

You can do the Bubble test but recently its been proven to be Unreliable (a few cars have had bad seals and passed the test)

Don\'t be to worried about the Mayo stuff in the Filler this can often be caused by Mosture in the Air mixing with the Oil Vapours and sticking to the Cold Filler Neck.

It could of course just be a Faulty rad, it does take quite a bit to blow a Rad usaly the AST would go first but like anything if there is presure in the system it will find the weakest link.

thanks for that mate il go out an have a look now , ive taken the filler neck off and cleaned it out , it had a bit of water in it but didnt taste of anti freeze so hopefully fingers crossed ive got a gammy rad !!!!????

When you say you filled it up with water, is this a regular thing.

Where are you filling it up ?

Is it pushing water back through to the expansion tank when you turn it off and possibly over flowing ? ( Not a good sign ) ........... I used to fill that up but i am told you hardly want any water in there ..............

Mind you I haven\'t checked that for years ............ about once a month I check the middle tank and it sometimes takes a little water .......... like 1/4 of a tea cup.

i just stuck the hose in the left han side bottle cause the measure was only on half , the water isnt coming out of their its coming out the rad which has burst , i wanted to know if the bursting could be anything to do with a water seal failure in the engine ? ive done both the bubble check and checking the pipes and they ar fine they arnt pressurising or expanding so hopefully its all down to a dodgey rad !!! i was worried with the bit of mayo in the oil lid but the dipstick has nothing on it except nice clan oil

Grizzly

More likly to be a dodgy rad tbh, i would expect the AST cap too have let any exess presure off and it would have acted like an overheat.

d-king

would it be worth me uprating the rad to an alli one and has anybody got one for sale or even a good o/e one ??? mine is only 4 months old so do you reckon that it should still carry a manufactures warrenty or sumthin ?

ro284

What presssure cap do you have on the AST? 0.9 or the higher 1.3?

Bit worried bout what you said above. Iv just recently replaced my rad and re filled the system the whole boring procedure. I get a lil water flow out the plastic expansion tank when i turn her off. Is this bad??

Well I used to keep the expansion tank pretty full which apparantly is not necessary ........... nowadays I just keep the centre filler topped up ..... any overflow may be caused by it being over full as water temps do go up when you switch off ........... someone did once explain though that when your seals go that you can get this overflow situation ......... dammit, can\'t remember the process .........

Someone will post with why it happens.

Few. Think iv prob just overfilled n its sortin itself out. Its only after its been running at temp so would suggest this. Thanks mate.

There\'s a whole coolant refilling thread in the Technical Stickies area I think.

Shouldn\'t be filling the overflow tank apparently.

No, water expands when hot thus if you have too much coolant in there it will flow the extra out of the expansion tank which has alittle overflow hole on the top of it so it can equalise the coolant level itself.

If water is disappearing at a rapid rate without a leak then you have a seal problem.
