Air con re-gas

I need a re-gas on my air con system as it all leaked out whilst in winter storage. However, the chap who came to do it said that it can only be filled up with a gas that has now been banned (CFCs I guess), and that the air con system would need a conversion to the new type of gas. Has anybody heard of this before? It sounds expensive.
