Well on most Single Turbo kits they have an External Waste gate, basicly they usaly are plumbed back into the Exhaust but a Screamer Pipe vents the Exhaust gasses from the waste gate into the Atmosphere ;)

Note on the Pic there is the Down pipe (the large one coming off the Turbo) and below it there is a Smaller pipe running parallel (Thats a Screamer Pipe)

So does it sound like a mega loud BOV?

Anyways going for a second look at that rex this weekend and a test drive, then time to make that million pound descision and jump head first into the jap world...!

Got a decent insurance quote, the only thing is if im going to fit it on the drive with my old mans fto in the way :P

Grizzly

Not quite BOV sound, more of a Jet fighter taking off ;)

The best advice i could give you being an Owner myself would be 1. Make sure you get a Compression test done by some one that knows what there doing 2. Get some one that has owned an FD to drive it for you.

A Bad Fd Handles like a Good Ford, a Good FD drives like no other car and will put a grin on your face every time you drive it :)

Nice!

Well with a reciept of proof that Jimmys rebuilt the engine and refurbed the turbos in Jan, im guessing the compressions will be about right, if not spot on.
I dont know anyone thats owned an FD before so that might be a bit hard, unless anyone on here is willing to give up an hour or so tomorrow mid morning that lives around the Chatteris/ Cambridge / Peterboro area?

Basically im going to be looking for smoothness of the acceleration/turbos, cold and warm engine starting, make sure no leaks etc and general stuff like that. Is there anything in specific i should really watch out for or look for?

Thanks for your on going help Grizzly :)

There is a reason you should get it Comp tested, Not saying anyone is Dodgy here but it has been known in the Past for cars to have "Had an engine rebuild" but Not!! Its a well known fact a car that\'s been rebuilt will sell quicker and Demand more money, so the more Unscrupulous people out there have been known to tell you its had one to make you think your getting a deal. SO.... That\'s why every one will tell you to Get it Comp tested.

But as i say not every one is like this (I have a Paranoid Nature) so if there is a Receipt that says for example Jimmys rebuilt it i\'d be phoning them up to find out details (Was it done?, Why was it done? and Is there any Warantee left on it?) This ways a Bit fool proof, but imagen if a Good Car dealer with a good back ground buys a car on face value then sells it on to you?

When you think about it your gambling a £3-4k Engine rebuild so you want to know all there is to know just so you don\'t end up with a Blown motor and the guy who was suposed to have done the Build saying he has no record?

what too look for, there is lots on this subject but i like to take it through the Rev range making sure both Turbo\'s spool up ok, Listen for Clunks and Whiney box\'s/Diffs whilst driving. But as i said before Its the Bushes and Suspension etc you need to pay attention to (its expencive to put right and will spoil the drive)

Its also good to check how its been looked after, Condition of Rear tyres etc. Any mods? If you have too many Mods (Decat and Big Exhaust is the main one that springs to mind) on a stock ECU it could be a Time bomb even if its had a Rebuild.

The rest is common sence, Making sure every thing Works and Oil is Clean (this should be changed Often so should be in good condition) Anti freeze is there and the levels are good, Genral stuff like that.

Ok il be really looking for them then.

Just out of interest, how much roughly would i be looking at for a general service, rolling road set up at a rotary specialist/jap specialist?

croig

WOW!!! I completely see what you mean Grizzly!! It was nothing else i have ever driven!! Such a precise machine! Steering was tight and exact, handleing was insane and no nocks or squeaks or anything.... So... here i am the latest member to the Rex crew  :Thumbsup!!!

Pick her up next weekend :D :D :D ! I really cannot wait!!

Theres just a couple of issues however...
1) worried about what alarm to get and where to get it, ive read the stories :eek

2)The rev counter didnt work most of the time - it \'danced\' all over the place, is this expensive/ difficult to rectify?

Anyways, cant wait for a club meet to show her off :Thumbs-up

Grizzly

I\'d put a Thread on the Main 3rd gen board about the faults, TBH i\'ve not had any of those Issues.

BUT!! I do have a Clifford Alarm and it tends to drive me mad (Wants Turning down a bit) Its goes off in High wind and heavy rain :( So its great at 3am.

croig

New treads startrd in the tech section about the alarm and rev counter then.

Well thanks again for all the help in helping me to choose the right FD guys!  I\'ll get some pics up of her next weekend:cheers
