i have had the car in being sorted for a single conversion but have been deciding on a turbo I have been down to a so called reputable turbo supplier and he has come up with the following.  Im looking for it to go onto a unported engine and would like to make 350 - 380 bhp once complete.  ny comments would be much appreciated
T3/T4 T04E TURBOCHARGER STAGE III WHEEL
.63 A/R COLD
.58 5 BOLT STANDARD HOT SIDE
3"INLET DIAMENTER
2"OUTLET
.57 COMPRESSOR WHEEL TRIM
.60 A/R COMPRESSOR
.63 A/R TURBINE
57 TRIM

when i reseached into it (limited knowledge on turbos ) I thoughts that something like bbt04e 57 trim with a 1.0 turbine a/r.

someone help so i can get the order in and drive it fast!!

cheers

bit small on the exhaust side for a rotary

royal

Can someone post up some more technical advice with some comparisons? Also some details of what differences the different bits make. I reckon it would be a nice thread to read and learn some stuff :-) I\'ve got a semi reasonable idea but it would be nice to hear it from a rotary point of view.

Im getting so confused with the choices and now im not gettinjg any nearer as most companies come up with something that all the people in the know on here say is too small or to big for a unported engine!!

antnicuk

that is WAY too small, that sounds like cossie spec T3/4.  You need at least 0.96 hot side and 0.60 cold side.

You can get away with a 0.84 hot side but its too small really.  I run a 0.96 - 0.70 and its not laggy and gives 460 fly HP on a TII FC3 block
400 BHP - 650 KG\'s = 616 BHP Per Ton of Rotary Power

That\'s the way to do it! :Thumbsup!

if you have a look at some of the websites that sell turbo kits for RX7\'s, it will give you the specs of the turbo\'s they use in the kits

just a quick post showing the differences and phrases ppl use commonly jsut so you can see what they mean.

In the above picture you have two turbos. Looking at the Exhaust side (brown coloured) areas of the turbos. The one on the left has a T3 style exhaust housing coupled with the fact it is quite small. probably as low as a .48 in size.

The Turbo on the right has a much larger exhaust housing also note the footprint is a T4 size (this is the square bit with the 4 bolt holes). The one in the picture also uses a Divided T4 exhaust housing. The size of this housign is large could be a 1.15 or bigger.

This picture shows the compressor housings of each turbo. at a guess i would say the one on the left is .50 in size im not sure of the one on the right. The left turbo appears to have a 3" standard inlet compared with the 4" Ported compressor housing of the turbo on the right. Ported shrouds help to eliminate compressor surge. (if you want to know what surge is best look it up on google :P)

This pic is the exits on each turbo. The right turbo has it taped up but you can see it is a very small exit with 3 bolts holding it on. The one on the left is what is known as a V-Band.

This shows what the compressor wheel size is like in each turbo. obviously a bigger housing is needed to house a bigger wheel. Like a bigger windmill it can flow more air.

Rough idea i know but thats my understanding on the subject :P

thanks for that its a big help.  What im looking for is a turbo that can run on a unported engine will run at about a bar and produce 350 - 400 bhpatw.  What im finding is that people are speking a smaller turbo and saying to run at 20-25 psi but i dont wanna run this high.

so on that note what is the suitability of bbt04e 57 trim with a 1.0 turbine a/r.

can anyone give the single spec that they are running with a unported engine for some comparisions.

will keep researching thanks for the pics and explanation starting to make sense now!

CraigN

if you only want that why not look at a gt35 kit.

should be able to make the power you want on the boost and will drive very well and spool very fast

you can get them in different flavours with an exhaust housing to suit your application.

tommygun

will have a look.  What are the limits of an unported engine with turbo size before it becomes too lagy?

CraigN

to be honest i don\'t know that much about the rotary engine to answer. I do know that the GT35R kit is a great turbo tho and will work on std engines obviously porting will help increase flow and thus power.

The GT35R on a Piston engine is a 600 hp capable turbo. So 350 - 400 on a rotary should be achievable. Depends on condition of engine i supose im sure someone else can comment on the porting question.

Tommy,

gt35/40 would suit you well...

sent you PM

Getting old... Its not like it was in my day!

Found this table on FC3SPRO site - this is for FC\'s, but the table gives a good indication of relative turbo sizes (compressor / exducer) so you can get an idea for how much these are likely to flow on a comparative basis.

What you really need to do is look at the CFM maps and see how much actual air you can pull in at particular pressures, and whether you have enough of a turbine wheel to do that job, given a set amount of fuel.
