Started the rex this morning and the power steering pump was chirrupping. It quitened a bit as it warmed up, but not much. Does this mean the bearings have worn? If so, is this time for a replacement pump?

If I do need a replacement pump, how easy would it be to put one of these french electric power steering pumps on? Is it much work? Or is it just a case of finding somewhere to put it, wire it in, and attach the hydraulics?

cheers :)

First thing is to check the fluid level if not its probably the bearings.

When and if you replace the pump be careful not to tighten the belt too much as it kills the bearings in the pump.

Hope this helps,

Thanks Clive. Can anyone tell me about electric power steering pumps?

Believe antnicuk was running an electric power steering pump. I\'ve got one ready to do the conversion but haven\'t got round to it yet. The pump that\'s fitted to both the Pug 106 and the Citroen Saxo is a good one to use. Run it on a direct feed from the battery with an ingnition operated relay. Just have to rig up a power steering hose then.

So, pretty straight forward then?

Is bleeding the hydraulics easy? And can any electric power steering pump be used? Or is it a specific set or type of pump required?

It certainly seems easy enough. Here\'s a link to the thread where antnicuk mentions how he went about it: http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14654

As for the type of pump you use, I\'m pretty sure you could use any electric PS pump...it\'s just that everyone I know who\'s using electric power steering has used the 106/Saxo pump.

I have the following problem:

When i use the power steering a lot, quickly, say parking, the wheel goes stiff for a while, then comes back.

Havent checked the belt yet, I will, but if thats ok, is it worthwhile to to drain and replace the fluid?

Hi Martin,

I have noticed that the fluid gets very black and watery in these cars, so it could be that an oil change may cure this, if it were me I would take a pipe off of the rack it self and turn the steering to get as much of the old fluid out as poss.

Hope this helps

That\'s the fella! That particular listing would be ideal as it\'s got everything you\'ll need...pump, relay and pipes. You could even bung the rack back on ebay to make some of your $$ back.
