Ok, I\'ve done some searching and seen that yeah its acceptable to have some mayo at your filler cap but how much exactly? My oil was changed on friday, done 50-60 miles since then and its like so -

I didnt really have a look in prior to the change but there was a little 2 weeks ago and I have it a wipe away no its back.

is this too much? the car produces a little white smoke on start up (I was lead to believe this is normal) but clears after 5-10 seconds.

Also the coolant level in the middle bit drops a little this is a pic of the lowest it goes, I\'ve been putting little ammounts in to top it up maybe once / twice a week. The plastic indicator on the side bottle sites at half way.

Is this anything to worry about? The engine was rebuilt by reworx 3500 miles ago and when I called them initially about the mayo they said it was nothing to worry about (this was the first time i seen it about 2 weeks ago)

thanks for any help.

The mayo is nothing to worry about, it will clear after a long run. Not sure on the coolant level.

Alittle mayo is ok matey just keep an eye on it to see how long it takes to reappear after wiping.

The coolant is also ok at that level, however if i fill mine to the top from the middle section the coolant stays just under the cap 98% of the time unless not checked for ages.

yeah wasnt sure about the mayo as u cant really see down without using a torch, duno why I was looking just wanted to check so got a torch to see better. I\'ll roll up some kitchen roll and stick it in and wipe all that away and check it in a week.
Going down to trax at the weekend so thats a good 350 miles each wayso should give me a good indication if its coming back. There is none on the dipstick and none floating about in the old oil either.

Level is back down as in the above picture after a few tiny wee top-up\'s, however the one on the left the plastic indicator is at full. Is this ok? Is there enough coolant just the level is down and its all in the other tank?

Yes, that\'s fine. Level should not be right at the top. All seems fine.

The mayo only apeards during the winter periods, when it\'s damp!!! if you get it during the summer then thats the time to start investigating!!! I pood my pants the first time I saw the dredded mayo, and did exactly the same as you, and I was reasured by alot of people that this was normal over the winter!!

My level is still like this, but since filling it up to the top from this level my bottle on the left (as you face the car) the overflow? is 1 notch above full. Is this now just a bit too much water so it has been put into the over flow, I bought a 1l bottle of deionised water when I got the car and ive used maybe 200ml tops out it.

You don\'t need to keep topping it up mate as thats the level it stays at on mine. By adding more and more water, all you\'re doing is filling the overflow tank. As long as the level stays the same in your pic and you have the same amount of water in your AST when you check it each time, then its fine. When I got my first Rex from Jimmys he said you don\'t need any water in the overflow tank and also not to fill up the overflow tank as thats what it is, an OVERFLOW tank, lol! I\'ve never had any problems following this advice and Andrew is an expert. ;)  HTH

Ive never opened my ast as it says not to, one time curiosity got the better of me and I unscrewed it but it didnt just come off like the centre one, seemed to be helpt in place? and I didnt wanna pull it incase I broke it.

So my levels ok at that and all I have been doing is filling my overflow? Could you explain how to check the ast level? I just have the standard plastic one.

Bone

Easy peasy, AST cap has a spring on it so you just push it down as you turn it as there are metal "catches" (for want of a better term) that stop you from being able to twist it open without pressing it down.
It only says not to open it as a health and safety thing cos some stupid fool will try and open it when the water is really hot and scald their silly face, hands, etc. :Giggle

haha the first thing I did when I saw the "do not open" was open it to have a nosey :Laugh

I am currently in the process of removing my AST for good! Makes space for a catch tank instead! :)

Cally

Dont you need the AST? Also a tutorial on how to fit the catch tank would be great!! lol I was going to buy one but unsure what size and how much hose I need!!
