Now ive read countless threads on here about insuring an rx7 (anthony\'s post with that all inclusive long list looked very helpful in narrowing down the bogger names) and i wanna make sure that i am likely to be able to afford the insuance before i buy the car this time. Got stung last time with the mr2 - import, modified, bought then looked for insurance :S stupid me.

i want a 3rd gen, import and would be modifying it so the insurance would need to allow for modifications (nothing under the bonnet really, maybe filter) but bodykit & alloys.

Do any of you guys (with your more experiance in rx terratory than me) think i will be able to find fully comp insurance low crime post code for the car for under around £1600?

If so, any companies that you guys have had good quotes from?
(dont mean to sound like im repeating a soooo comman asked question but this is the only place i could think to ask about insuring :) )

Appreciate any help guys.

Chris

RX7 R2

Hay mate, I\'m 22, 2ncb. 1 crash, still pending so classed as a fault claim. No points/convictions. Just short of £1100 with Admiral.

So the answer is yeh the car is possible, dunno about after mods though.

ScuttleRX

Admiral/Elephant (same company) can give you a good price without mods, and will accept a few although have some funny ways like dont mind exhausts, but wont insure induction kits, but air filters are ok?!

Id say just give them a ring and get some quotes, they shouldnt have any problem with bodykit/alloys, a maybe a couple of small engine mods. If I remember rightly they sometimes have a limit of number of mods you can have in total. I was with them with bodykit, alloys, filters, exhaust, ecu. But when I wanted to put suspension and bonnet on they werent happy, eventually got them to let me put bonnet on though.

Id say your £1600 target should be achievable but might take some ringing around, hopefully you\'ll get lucky early on.

Also, if this happens to be a second car, it would be worth looking into a classic car policy, although these do require car to be garage and have limited mileage.

well as you can see from my thread, when i tried this i was the same age as you, extra years ncb and 2 more years driving and best i got was £1595.
This was for a real fd, had loads of insurers quoting for the 2400cc, which they claimed was an fd and it wasnt it was the fc.

not sure how that guy got 1100 from admiral as best i could get was 3500, elephant was 1874 :)
i couldnt get a classic car insurers at 21, you had to be over 25.

although i think it was aplan they said i could try them next insurance year, as id be 22 (nearly 23) and driving the fd for over a year.

if you get cheap insurance somewhere post it on my list :) ill be creating a new one in feb again while i ring them all again :)

elford_tim

If you can park the FD on your driveway or otherwise off the road it may definitely be worthwhile looking into a classic-car type policy. The only other downside with those is that you tend to get a limited mileage per year and you\'d need another car. Although for me the price difference in between the FD insurance as a daily driver and as a classic with something else as a daily driver is more than enough to insure the daily driver as well...

anthony

please let us know who will insure this as a classic for people under 25 :)

i cant find anywhere at 22, mines garaged and a second car.

elford_tim

Ah bummer, yes, I had forgotten that given that I\'m a slightly[1] older than 22...

[1] Slightly pretty much reached the age of consent a few days ago if you know what I mean.

lol elford_tim. Its not the age, its how old ya feel :D

thanks for all the help guys, is very much appreciated. Can see that my target (or around about there) maybe possible afterall so i can look to getting the car i have always wanted. Done the progression building up to it and really wanted my 4th car to be a rx. I will post up when i get quotes and that and look forward to seeing how ya get on anthony. Great that u put up that list, is a great help to newcomers to the world of rx7\'s :)

Any other guys please add to this list if ya have anything that might help :)

cj.

thanks will check it out. (Although most mass online ones always seem to come back with stupid quotes. grrr)

ScuttleRX

they do normally, this one really suprised me though! I got 5 quotes around the £600 mark at age 24 (although 25 in a few days).

If you want you can use my reg P65 PKE, that will make sure you get the right model will be a 96 2600cc import twin turbo manual, if you put in a 92-95 one would be in danger of selecting a uk model by mistake which would give you a cheaper quote than what it would actually be, and sometimes they mess the models and the cc up so this would ensure some accuracy.

cj.

wow thanks mate. Yea the plate would help a lot, as it is hard getting all the details correct. Appreciate all the help from ya mate :)
Want my rx even more now so i can be part of the forum more :D (not intended to sound lame)

ScuttleRX

It is a very helpful place :) apart from the occasional shambolic for sale thread :o

cj.

well just did a quick quote, the 6 quotes ranged from £1874 - £2061.

but that was listing the car as having no modifications. £1800 isnt too bad, but want to ensure the insurance peeps know about the modifications. Not playing the "not tell them" game lol.
