has anybody got any experience with using 2 or 3mm ceramic seals in high rpm reving high powered engines ?
my full bridge fc engine im building has 3mm milled rotor grooves with a set of atkins 3mm steal tips, after getting advice and reading a bit of info and finding that 3mm steal tips dont like to rev and wear housings out quicker, generate more heat and friction ect ect, im thinking of going for ceramics now.
Any info or tips anyone?
who supplys iannetti seals?

some good info on this link for anyone interested.

Yes go for ceramics they are great, they are the ultimate apex seal. Also 3mm is the way forward!!

Phone Carl (hayward) I know he uses iannetti seals:Thumbs-up I would\'ve gone for them if I could have afforded them at the time. I used to run ceramics in my old RX3 back in oz, definately the way forward as Ross has said.

When cermaics eventuly let go don\'t the take the rest of the car with them??? i can\'t remember who i was talking too but they had ceramic tips and the tips let go needed new houses, intermidiate plates, re-condition the turbo due to bits of seal wrecking the impelors also very badly damaged a rotor..... ended up costing him alot more than it could have done if he had been using non-ceramic...

Don\'t know if this is a common thing when cermics go pop but is one story i heard

^^^^ that was Tim, he went through a set of ceramics in about 5 mins! Also went though the ceramic coated housings very quickly. But if you\'ve seen how Tim treats the purple beastie you\'d understand! From what I\'ve heard Tim is the only person to have had a bad experience of the ceramics. Saying that he uses normal apex seals now and still revs to 14k! (Just every run warps the seals).

Makes sense though because Tim now knows what each component takes to fail useful advice for customers

hoy much are the 3mm iannetti solid seals?
cant find anyone who sells them anywhere,
also all my slots have .004" to .006" clearence with the 3mm atkins seals in, do they need to be tighter than this because ceramic doesnt expand.
I read somewhere that .0015" each side of the apex seal max for ceramics, this is .003" clearence.
cheers for the info ross, youve made my mind up for me!

Yeh you have to use the correct Springs and get the Correct clearance. You realy want to ask on the AUS forum, Keep your Eyes open for Peter Giljevic (RiceRacing http://www.geocities.com/riceracingaustralia/index.htm) he is your man for ceramics, iannetti\'s are good but VERY expencive I have been told NRS are the way to go (Good value for Money)

There is a BIG thing about Aftermarket Apex Springs, Its a NO NO to use anything but OE Mazda (not sure about Ceramics) they will go flat very Quickly but for some reason (proberly the MILLIONS Mazda put into R&D) the mazda Springs don\'t flatten quite the same.

I Bought some iannetti\'s a few years ago and tbh i could not belive how they Arrived, They have there own little Wooden Box with an X-Ray of each seal inside? You can see why they are expencive. I\'d still Use 2mm OE though:Thumbs-up

Ceramics are certainly the way forard in not only the rotary engine but in other applications as well, for instance turbine blades.  Ceramics have superb heat abilities in that they are really not affected by heat and can withstand extreme temperatures.  brillient in a rotary engine.  The only major problem with them is that when they go....they go and I am just wondering how much more damage they might cause compared to that of the OEM seal.  Ceramics are widely used in aero engines because they do not expand and tighter tolerances can be allowed in engine building.  Ceramic can shatter quite cataspropically as they are affected by harsh hot to cold temperatures and visa versa.  Temperatures in an aero engine reach 2000 deg C but with blade cooling via air holes in the blades this comes down to an acceptable 800.

does anyone know what the combustion temps are in the rotary?? ie actually in the combustion chamber and not exhaust temps as these can be quite different.

what amazes me about the rotary is the many points of view on every aspect.

For this reason the rx7 will never ever die!

P.S i should never have joined that wine club!!
