Hi all, ive been hiding behind the scenes for a few months now on the forum, and ive finally decided an RX-7 is the next car for me :yes

i just wondered if anyone could give me a quick breakdown on the models and which is the \'best\' to get - altho ive done a bit of research into rex\'s im by no-means an expert!! does anyone know of the official and \'realistic\' performance figures of rx7s?

also i wondered if there are any ex scooby owners on here who\'ve migrated to the rex side??!! ive recently sold my impreza turbo which was pretty nippy circa 260bhp and wondered how a rex is going to feel to me coming from a scoob as ive not had the pleasure of test driving 1 just yet??!!??

great looking/informative forum by the way!!!

Welcome ! :)

I had a Scooby running 326bhp and have moved to a Rex. I haven\'t picked it up yet, should do this weekend if I can get a session booked with RE:Worx for mapping, but from what I\'ve read the experience will be very different. I\'ll miss the trademark \'burble\' of the boxer engine tho.

For starters the Rex is RWD :eek
Then there\'s the twin tub setup :D
Performance wise, I think standard should hit 0-60s in around 5 secs.

Re \'best to get\', I\'m sure there\'s an opinion for everyone on the forum. Think there\'s a thread which lists all the models. Certainly seen one on the net of you have time doing a quick Google. Post 1995 cars had a slight power increase, but then this can be ignored if it\'s been modified from standard.

You\'re probably best to try and find a well looked after lightly modded car, to save you spending a lot yourself initially on mods (if you\'re that way inclined, otherwise a low mileage standard car is the way to go)

What\'s your budget more importantly ?

there are a few nice ones in for sale section that have nice mods on them

TBH most rx\'s have had a few mods done to them which really makes the model type irrelevant, however the Type R and special edition ones and i think the RZ all have twin oil coolers (someone correct me if wrong) which will help with the oil cooling otherwise no major differences some have rear seats and some have rear bins.

Driving wise the rx feels like a sports car should feel i have had a Nissan Skyline, Escort Cosworth, Mr2 Twin entry turbo, SLK merc, Sierra Cosworth and the rx7 is by far the best to drive not being biased just my view tbh :King

Deffo take one out for a test drive if you can find one close to you, trust me you\'ll love it :Laugh

Yep, Type R, RB and RZ have twin oil coolers :)
Later RB\'s had a 16 bit ECU from 1995 on which upped the power slightly, but like you said most will probably be modded with a PowerFC now so irrelevant.

I used to hanker after a Skyline or a Supra, but they\'re larger and heavier cars. Was settling on the Supra after a while, but because of the longer wheelbase I\'d struggle getting it home with the amount of speedbumps in the estate :(
Of all the things to stop buying a car for, but I\'d be damned leaving it for the neds to \'look after\'

Saying that one of the reasons for selling my first rx7 was the induction of speedbumps on my main road home from work, so sold the rx got a Skyline as they are slightly higher, 2 months later they took the damn bumps back out again ????? :Hammer  what a waste of tax money something like £150,000 on a wasted project :Nono!

thanks for the welcomes and info guys, much appreciated :)

so if possible a type r is one to look out for?!

i think my scoob was roughly 5s\' 0-60 altho it didnt feel that quick, I keep being told its a totally different driving experience so im certainly looking forward to taking one for a test drive :)

out of curiosity what kind of mods are recommended to reach say 300bhp which sounds a nice round figure to aim for :D

i remember when i had the scoob, to reach that type of figure you were looking at full exhaust system, decat, suitable panel filter, front mounted intercooler and bigger turbo, but from what ive seen it looks a little more complicated on the rex\'s??!

thanks again for all the info!!

RZ is probably the best example to go for standard, but is like hens teeth. Type RB more common so easier to get hold of.

Mods wise, to hit around the 300 mark, prob looking at induction, exhaust system, uprated or secondary injectors and fuel pump, and an Apexi PowerFC ECU to control it all. Uprated intercooler would be nice, but expensive. There are various types of IC to go for; Front Mount, Uprated Stock Mount or V-Mount. V-Mount generally regarded as the better configuration as it doesn\'t restrict the airflow to the radiator.

I have all of the above (with Greddy uprated stock mount IC config whilst I save for a V-Mount) and she\'s being dyno\'d this week at RE:Worx so I can give you an approx. figure hopefully soon if interested.

This was my old car, was dyno\'d after I sold her at 326bhp

Not yet mate, Gareth\'s not had time to send me any from the workshop :(
Funnily enough, the insurance company were asking as well to agree the value of the car once it\'s finished.

Will be posting a thread up the night I arrive back home with plenty shots :D

TBH Chiz,

Depending on what funds you have 300bhp is not that high a figure to aim for, if you have a decent starting figure you can buy a rx pumping out over that figure quite easily, for the bigger power outputs the single turbo rx7\'s are the way to go or the TT setup going non-sequential will give well over 300bhp quite easily.

All depends on funds and how much power you really want, 300-380 bhp can be achieved with TT but over 400bhp you want to go single turbo really

Aww. Boohoo ;)

Cool, will give you a shout nearer the time, hoping this weekend. Just the bonnet to fit and mapping at RE:Worx left to go, so all depends on their schedule really....
