Hey guys,

I have some puffs of blue smoke coming from my exhaust after I boot it, does anybody know what to check to try and diagnose it?

I have quite a lefty oil leak and there is a possibility that oil is seeping onto the exhaust and getting burn\'t off - but if that was happening why would it only smoke when i boot it?

On idle it\'s fine. Water is fine.

Any thoughts?

Prof

1) oil seals in turbo going?
2) metering oil pump feeding in too much oil?
3) signs of failure in engine seals?

If its mainly on Over run have a closer look at the Turbo.

If it was Oil control rings it would do it all the time and my T2 had a problem with its OMP sticking open and that would smoke lots on idle.

Are you getting oil out of the Blow off Valve? and is there oil in the Boost pipes?

Prof

I am,  and no smoking on idle - plus oil consumption is very high - I think defo the turbo for me - sounds like your\'s is the same tokyo.

okay thanks guys i will check these points

Smoke in exhaust can also be caused by to much oil being fed to turbo and pushing past bushes on overrun when there is no boost and lots of vacuum.

You may need a restrictor in the oil feed pipe.

tokyo_black

Hmm ok, but how do I tell if i need a restrictor?

MillSpeed

Are you running any additional fuelling? The stock set up is pretty sooty, could just be unburned fuel getting chucked out the exhaust on overrun. Does it look like oil smoke?

tokyo_black

It is a single turbo with bigger injectors and apexi ecu - (im guessing thats not standard fueling??-im not very mechanically minded :Hammer)

vxer

Isn\'t blue smoke petrol burning? I thought oil smoke was white?

Could just be running very rich, maybe?

Ta, Paul.

Prof

Petrol - no colour - shouldn\'t be any smoke

Water / Coolant - White/Grey smoke

Oil - Blue/Grey

Massive lack of oxygen and hydrocarbons not burnt - Black Smoke - sometimes accompanied by a flame !

Oooh we are learning :D

I\'m going to try and check my boost pipes for oil contamination this weekend.. now I just need to figure out which are my boost pipes...

If I post up an engine bay shot could anyone annotate it for me? :Typing

tokyo_black

Could anyone highlight which are the boost pipes on this pic that i can check for oil contamination?

Thanks guys:cheers

the same line as the mushroom filter is on, I would suspect to find oil deposits deeper in after the turbo rahter then the line between the filter and the turbo... o_o I believe so anyway

Grizzly

Ither of the two on the Intercooler (in is best though which is the drivers side one) of the two blue hoses fastened to the Turbo the one without the air filter on the end :)
