Just one small point from their letter: I quote

Fuel supply hose disconnected whilst vehicle in motion

Reading that suggests to me that they are implying that the fuel pipe was physically disconnected, they don\'t say \'became disconnected of failed\'

Are they trying to suggest this fire was deliberate.

Just seems an unprofessional term to use.

I\'d be willing to contribute to the fight.

Have you thought about emailing a link of this thread to any news organisations?  Might get a spot on the news - then you can let Declan Curry fight them :god

It\'s certainly ambiguous which is something lawyers love to destroy in court :)

I have just got off the phone to my insurer enquiring wether or not I had cover given the same circumstances. They have advised me that it is a common exclusion on all motor insurance and basically it comes down to two things.

Any mechanical failure is either down to a manufacturing fault or the result of incorrect/non-existent maintenance, therefore it is not covered since it must be the fault of either the manufacturer, the owner or a garage!!

Apparently the FSA, one of the insurance governing bodies backs this exclusion in all motor policies.

PLEASE NOTE: this is what I have been told and is not my personal opinion. It may also be the case that the information I was given could be incorrect.

Not giving you a flaming here (As you say, not your opinion, but from an insurance company direct), but what!!? As far as insurance companies are concerned, those are the only reasons for mechanical faults!? What about normal wear and tear? Things fail! What about a wheel bearing failure - these will eventually happen, and although to get to the point so severe that it causes the crash is unlikely before you notice it - if that happened and you crashed, they\'re saying you wouldn\'t be covered!

I\'d hope insurance companies are more realistic than that!!

^ I agree, going on thier logic, if my car goes on fire I\'ll be aiming for the nearest tree so that I can say "the impact caused it" and I\'ll claim personal injury as well.

Any car thats gets serviced/MOT\'d is only passed for the time it is on the garage forecourt.  A friend of mine that runs a test station says he\'s had people arrive on bald tyres, swap their mates wheels over and then enter the car for the test, he has no choice but to pass the car and as soon as they have the cert they swap them back again.

Its like house insurance saying... that plug that was at fault... well it should have been maintained.

This definitely makes the blood boil!

yeah it just makes you think the "fire" part of an insurance policy is utter crap and is not worth the paper it is written on, false advertising I reckon.

But as been said before Syandi, they wont cover the "mechanical part" that has gone wrong but they should cover the "Subsequent" fire resulting from Mechanical failure

Oh and keep all receipts for car hire, taxi fares and even shoes as you had to walk places that you would usually drive too.

Oh and "the hose diconnected whilst vehicle in motion" bit made me laugh. I actually thought that Super heroes were mythical beings out of a comic book. It goes to show how wrong one can be.

Anyway, here\'s one for my insurance company:

I got my car up to 250 mph whilst racing a 747 on the north runway at Heathrow Airport. I of coures beat him to the end then took off ahd landed on the moon 4 hrs later. Then went to the Lunar racetrack and raced martians and other inter galactic race car drivers. Won the Solar cup then headed back to Surrey and was home in time for tea.

Please feel free to quote me in court.

BB I too am willing to donate a fiver as I\'m sure would other members of my club.

Really they make there own laws, there saying that they will only cover fires that are started deliberately, as all other fires are started by mechanical faults for which the policy holder is not covered. personally i think they need lashing! for being such bastards!

I do hope that members on this board do not think that I am trying to make light of the situation with my comments above, I\'m merely trying to emphasize the fact that we can all make up any cock and bull story to impress our peers. IMHO unless they have physical or visual proof off their allegations then they do not have a leg to stand on gleaning their clients posts as evidence.

Indeed :) Do they mean they only pay out in arson cases? If so, that\'s an interpretation of Fire cover I\'ve not heard before... Assholes the lot of them.

£5 from me to help the cause mate :)

whilst I baulk at the thought of putting fuel on the fire...(no pun intended BB)  I must admit that I had omitted that fair wear and tear as well would be considered as the owners responsibility, and therefore not covered under the policy.

In addition it is worth reading some of the exclusion clauses in your insurance documents and just how ambiguous some of them are. For instance the comment from alexb about arson...this could be argued that it comes under the "civil disobedience" clause...

Just makes you think what we are all paying for....

Also dont forget that anything, and I mean ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING you have fitted to your vehicle that is not an originally specified part can be used to wriggle out of a claim, this means that new stereo you treated yourself to could cost you the value of your vehicle should you need to make a claim. Or even the fitting of something that enhances the safety of your vehicle, like foglights!!

alexb

God it\'s depressing isn\'t it?! Funny how *buying an insurance policy* is a legal requirement but the insurance co. can take the **** when it comes to the time we have to claim on that legally required policy... Come to think of it, would state insurance be any better?

Anyway, the point about fire cover is surely not the cause, but the consequence. Keep it up BB :)

Cheers,
Alex
