Ok I went to do an oil change, so I read up what i needed on the forum (19mm spanner etc) And off i went upto my work after hours to get the car on the ramps.

Got my 19mm spanner onto the sump nut and with little to no force it turned but not like a full rotation just a little, on closer inspection I found that I would now pull the plug away from the sump and slide the probe out its wee hole. Ok so the oil is coming out... but how am I going to tighten it back up if this bit snapped.

I have drawn up this little diagram -

Part 1. is like a very soft matal part which goes in to have a sleeve into the sump for the probe.

part 2. is there I think it has snapped from part 1, as it sits in but there is no way of tightening it.

I then tried to loosen the 19mm nut from the other behind it, which it did but would not come off over the probe.

Had a closer look at part 1 and it looks like its maybe been broken and bodged back together before, so i had a wee go at loosening part 1 out the sump as i asumed it was just a sort of reducer for the probe which was screwed into the normal thread for the 19mm plug. However the metal was very very soft and it wouldnt turn and i didnt want to damage it.

Does anyone have any idea whats went wrong / is wrong here? In need of urgent help please as the cars still on the ramp and the custom exhaust guy will need it in th morning.thanks.

Sorry i\'m a little Confused. The Sump plug has\'nt got a Probe on it? there is a level Sencer also in the sump pan?

Is this on an fd?

Cally

Forgot to add, I have a Greddy oil temp gauge, so I am guessing this could be an aftermarket sump plug which allows the probe into the sump?

Cally

Yeah its an FD. Which side is the level sensor on?

Grizzly

Ahh ok.

The stock Fd sump has a level sensor (thats should be held on with three 10mm\'s) on the Other side to the sensor is the sump plug, this is usaly just a 19mm bolt that screws into a Captive Nut in the Sump.

I would imagen it would unscrew like the std plug, so if you look at your Sump plug it should have a Coller that sticks out from the sump its self, thats the end of the captive nut, If you are carfull you should be able to unscrew it from that (mine turns Anti clockwise to undo) just be gental as its most likly Brass is its some sort of sender.

Sensor is usually where oil filter goes via a sandwich plate. Are you sure its not a bodge by the person before. I would go buy a new nut and use that, if the gauge dont work then worry about it.

This is what it should look like. I just can\'t make up my mind if the Plug is still in? but you should be able to see the end of the Captive nut. (i think thats still got the std plug in tbh)

Cally

The gauge didnt work anyways, it needed plumbed in. I wonder if maybe the sensor was damaged. Basically when I look into the sump I cant see a thread, its a shiney silver part which reduces down to like a 5-10 mill hole which the probe fits snuggly into, but then there is no way of screwing the part that has came away back on. And I cant see a way of removing the shiney silver part thats in the whole for the sump plug.

Cally

As mentioned in my above post I have a wee shiney bit that sticks out a little further than the dark coloured metal of the sump, and no thread is visible. And the standard plug cant still be in as the oil came out the small hole (like the size of a biro pen)
Could this be some sort of greddy part which has been damaged an bodged?

Grizzly

Can you take a picture of it?

Grizzly

Could you not get hold of the bit left in the sump with some pipe wrenches and replace it with a std Sump plug?

Cally

Well I wasnt sure if that bit was meant to be in so didnt wanna force it, as when I tried to grip it the metal was so soft it was just marking and pushing in.

The best way to explain it is, if you looked from the side you would think the sump washer was still stuck to the sump, but when you move round its not, its like a wee silver funel into the sump.

Cally

yeah, imagine the stanard sump plug without a thread, just the head of the nut with a 5mm silver probe coming out the centre. Then on the actual sump instead of the whole having a thread to accomodate a 19mm plug its got a silver bit which is flat but with a hole for the probe to fit in and looks like it maybe have broken off the nut.

Does anyone have a pic of a greddy oil temp sump probe?

Cally

would I be able to chemical bond it (the liquid metal stuff that goes hard as fook) to seal it up then drive it to a local garage that deals with FD you think?
