Hey everyone im a new member, iv always loved the RX7 and never dreamed i would be able to own one and now i have so money im really excited about the prospect.

I currently drive a 2000, BMW Z3. I love this car to bits and this is the only thing stopping me buying one tomorrow, because i will have to sell the Zed to afford the RX7.

If i get a maximum of 10k for my Z3 i will have a budget of around 6.5-7k to spend will this get me a decent RX7 or should i spend a little more. I don\'t want to spend the whole 10k because i will need to buy a second car as i wont be able to insure the Rex until im 21 (11 months).

Are there any massive problems that happen on 7\'s (i\'m a vehicle technician so am competent of carrying out my own repairs) that i should be wary of when buying one?

Thanks for reading my long post look forward to getting to know you guys.

I\'v just seen a \'95 red one with 40k on autotrader, completely standard!

Spend your £7k on one with a rebuild already done.

Welcome aboard!

;) becarfull that dont bite you in the Ass. The Rx7 engine is more of an Engineering task, To rebuild one you must have underpants of steel take the upper inlet off one and you\'ll see what i mean ;)

LOL, TBH there not that bad just not too be underestimated, you\'ll see loads of storys of people rebuilding there cars more than once becouse they missed somthing or nicked a seal, and you will always need a good tuner in your Corner.

:)

If you want some advice !!! do a search on here, read, then read some more then when you think you know what your looking at Read a bit more. Knowing as much about them as poss will save you alot of money in the future.

I would never do one on my own i will always have plenty of people around helping me.

At around what sort of mileage do they need a rebuild? How much to get the pro\'s to do it? I\'ve done a few searches found that hunting revs and overheating are quite common problems nothing major i suppose.

But that sort of money will get me a fairly good rex, yes?

I see The RX8 has its own little section with technical advice does the RX7 just have this section then?

Hello mate, I\'ve recently bought an Rx7 (and very happy with it :) ). If you can afford it I\'d spend a couple of K more to get a good one with extra cooling mods and so on already in place. That said there do seem to be good ones about for your price. Its certainly a buyers market so you should do well.

There really not that bad I\'d rather re-build a rotary than a boinger.

DeanoZ3

Royal, what spec was the one you bought? where from? how much?

Yeh but you ever seen a Boinger with that many Vac pipes? You do have to be handy with the measuring gear :)

DeanoZ3

As long as you have the right tools and information nothing is that difficult the hardest thing in engineering or technical jobs are diagnosis.

As soon as you can get your head round the twin turbo controll system then a rotary engine is so wasy to work on its un belivable, if you were to buy a single turbo it would be even sweeter.

Allstar are you an Engineer? i was a mechanic for quite a while before becoming a painter and to be honist i found the tight Tolarances and Measurments a bit of a pain, Dont get me wrong i have all the gear and more but there is sooo much stuff to measure it takes an Age and the side seals are not what you would call easy to fit.

I supose Service items are easy to change but unless you want to spend alot of money on new Housings, keeping the old seals and cutting corners you will be spending a few days measuring stuff. Vebuild Vid\'s are a Masive help but as i say a rotary engine is more a Engineering task that a Mechanic.

Also as i say Don\'t underestimate rebuilding one, there are so many things that can btie you in the Wallet, take your time and buy a rebuild vid.

There is a nice single turbo on autotrader, why would they have a single turbo conversion done?

AshRX

Cause the twin turbos have a tendency to be a little tempremental when boosting up. The rats nest that controls the twins isnt the nicest thing to work on, and if one of those vacum pipes splits etc its a right pain finding out which pipe and then you still have the chance of the turbos not boosting properly.

Single turbos get rid of the rats nest and there is less to go wrong with the turbos.

Many like the twin turbo set up, but you will always get more power out of a good single than you would out of the twins

how much on average does a rebuild by a pro cost?
