Devil\'s Refugee

New to here, previously ran a Scoob, but decided after 3 years absence I needed something new, so plumped for a Rex from Miguel at Newera :)

Anyways, the question is; the car is pretty stock, will be fitted with a \'99 spec front bumper and possible carbon fibre splitter, suspension is stock.

Does anyone have problems with speed bumps with a similar set up ?

They\'re quite severe where I live (about the same height as the pavement) and althought I\'d like the fit the splitter, it may mean I have to leave it off, especially if  decide to uprate the suspension later (possibly Tein unit with EDFC)

The Scoob was lowered with a P1 front splitter and it make it across Ok (although on leaving the bump, it did scrape on the way down sometimes) but the Rex looks a lot lower from standard.

Last thing I want to happen is the car arrives and I can drive it home !!!

If anyone has pics to post of a Rex up against the pavement to get an idea of ground clearance I\'d appreciate it.

Cheers

Firstly, welcome - you\'ll love the rex when you drive it :)  Be a tad careful until you get used to the power delivery - the transition period where the 2nd tubby comes online seems to catch a lot of people out if it\'s wet when they first drive the thing!

Secondly - change the Jap rubber for decent UK tyres too (eagle F1 or similar).  The j-spec tyres are lethal.

As for your question - when mine was stock height it occasionally scraped on steep bumps but not too bad if you approach them at a crawl!  It\'s a tiny bit lower now (but stiffer) and only scrapes if I don;t kill enough speed.  Some of the guys with very low ride height do struggle though.

I can vouch for the Tein kit - it\'s brilliant and transforms the car if it\'s got tired stock springs and dampers.

Cheers, and thanks for the tips.
On the Scooby I used to run with Toyo Proxos, with the suspension set up she would corner exceptionally, so if there are not issues I might buy a set for the Rex.

Will watch for that boost !! :D

The car has only travelled 23k mls in total, so the suspension will do for now. Spent a fortune on smaller cosmetic and engine mods (RE-Amemiya AD9 carbon bonnet, HKS induction, exhaust and PowerFC, 99 spec bumper) so the suspension can wait in the meantime if it helps with the ground clearance problem although I really want that carbon front lip ! :cool

Actually, Iain, how much lower is the Knightsport\'s front bumper to a 99 spec ??

No clue!  it\'s more about the ride height setting though.  Mine\'s 9/10cm from the ground so not super-low.  The bottom of the exhaust back box is more of a problem - it\'s about 5/6cm and catches regularly :(

I think it seems to depend really. My car is about 3" off the ground at the front (HKS coilovers) and I can make it over most speed bumps without any scraping. Like you say if you drop off too fast it can scrape.

I think if you go very slowly over them at first you will soon realise which ones are ok, the only ones i struggle with are the oval black ones which are too high and on the side you are lowering back down it will scrape only just.

Oh and welcome to MRC matey, theres a few owners in Edinburgh who are on here too :Laugh

Just remembered the way to get over the high ones without scraping. Basically at the start go full lock right or left and go up slowly, once you\'re at the top go full lock the other direction. This works for me but is damned annoying.

Modern so called \'road calming\' measures are quite ridiculous imo...It\'s getting to the point where you virtually need the ground clearance of a 4x4 to traverse our road systems cos they\'re either falling to pieces through neglect OR having man made hazards like speed humps or chichane systems installed in the \'so called\' name of safety.....:2Mad
FD or not FD? that is the question.

Don\'t get me started. I\'ve asked the Council to reappraise the bumps, a lot of the residents with \'normal\' cars are having front lip damage coming off them because they\'re quite severe. It\'s the only thing which has put me off buying an RX for so long.
I might have to forget the CF lip and just have the front bumper without it in order to at least get her home.
