I seem to be idleing a little low and wanted to perform a compression test for my own peice of mind having read plenty of descriptions on how to perform it I only have 1 question, which may seem a little dumb, but sometimes you just need things fully explained to you:

How do you crank the engine and how do you measure the RPM, im guessing with the RPM counter!

Having never really got my hands that dirty with anything engine related I don\'t really have a clue yet, but this is my second month owning an RX7 and I can see myself becoming accustomed very quickly!

Also, very occasionally at high RPM > 6->7k I sometimes get a sudden drop in RPM (say 500->1000rpm) for a split second accompanied by a change in engine tone, and also a pretty large flame out of my exhaust (spotted by a friend behind me).  I have a straight through exhaust and I heard these can be prone to exhaust backfire and I do get a lot of popping usually when releasing the throttle.  Im not so much worried about the popping, but the big flame has definitly got my attention..

Do you know what kind of ECU you have on it? Might be worth getting one of the specialist to check it over, they can do a compression test and advise you on whether you have a mappable ecu and whether it requires remapping..

you crank the engine with the starter motor...i think you got to remove the fuel pump relay and/r the main egi fuse (off the top of my head). You need a proper rotary tester to measure the rpm.

Everything is standard on the car apart from the exhaust, I forgot to mention the car is currently having the turbos remanufactured because they were passing oil could excess unburnt oil be being passed through the engine and into the exhaust system?, I get it back this week so I can check to see if the exhaust is still backfiring.

Ok, so whats the procedure for this? The starter motor bit - Just turn the ignition on and attempt to start the car?

Jit

as i understand it, you remove the relevant fuses and then bsically yeh, try and start the car....
