Alright Guys,

Spent the last 2 days reading through some info to get back up to speed, previously owned an RX8 so used to frequent MRC.....

I\'m planning on buying an early FD next year that is either needing or close to needing a rebuild as it will be more of a project car for me than anything else.

Questions -

1 - When rebuilding roughly how much should i budget for the standard rebuild parts assuming nothing major is gone (above average)...... ?

2 - When the engine is out i plan to get it ported (street-port) and polished, roughly how much would this cost and is there anywhere in Scotland that can do it?

3 - Apart from a new water pump what else should i be looking to replace / upgrade.... oil coolers, pumps etc... anything that will increase reliability and also tuning potential going forward.

4 - Should i replace the standard fuel pump and injectors, again roughly what budget.....

5 - I am planning on putting in an Apexi PFC, budgeting around the 550 mark, how much is it to get it mapped?

6 - Assuming i upgrade the exhaust system, prolly de-cat, have the engine street ported, fit the PFC and get it mapped what is a realistic expectation of BHP on the stock turbo\'s.... ?

7 - All the work i\'m planning is to get the car running perfect and also to leave it pretty much ready for upgrading the turbo\'s to a single, should i decide to go there........ anyone want to hazard a very rough figure for my budget for all of the above work (excluding twin to single tubby)

Cheers
Chris (ps - apologies for all the questions!)

1. Id budget roughly 3k for the worst case and if it comes in under, then you wont be so unhappy.

2. Tim @ rxmotors does the porting for 300 iirc if you send him your plates....cant think of anyone in scotland.

3. OMP id have thought

4. Im not replacing mine..depends on if you plan for future upgrades as injectors arent the easiest to get to so would save you doing the job twce if you done it during rebuild...im only planning for stock power at the moment so im not bothering. All im having done is inectors calibrated and cleaned. Just read your planning for single turbo...if so id say uprate the injectors whe rebuilding...

5. mapping is between 250-350 at any of the major vendors on here ive found.

6. no idea...

7. a lot!

Nice to see someone else in Scotland has some taste, not many FD\'s up here. For your porting you are best to get it done by one of the rotary specialist to make sure it done properly, think most of them will do it if you send them the plates. Replacing all the coolant pipes while doing them rebuild is probably a good idea, in fact if you are going single you may wish to upgrade the intercooler (V mount, FMIC or an upgraded SMIC) and possibly a new radiator. You will definately need upgraded injectors and fuel pump for going single so you are as well doing that while the engine is out. My PFC cost £300 to get mapped but it is possible to get one cheaper than the £550 that you are budgeting.
My car has the mods you state apart from the porting and has about 255rwhp (300ish at the fly) so you are looking at so you are looking at somewhere a bit more than that.  That leaves cost, for that how long is a piece of string, as there are so many variables. Defo wouldn\'t be expecting much change from £5k but depending on the parts you use that figure could rise significantly.

Good luck with it

Where in Scotland you from Barmar, tbh thats one of the reasons i would like one, only ever seen 2 FD\'s on the road......

Where did you get to do your mapping?

Cheers
Chris

rebuild parts:

housings are about £450 each I think, then you have the rebuild pack (all seals, gaskets and control rings.) that cost me £200 for a 12a so prob a bit more than that for the rebuild pack. Then you need to look at you plates, if they need replacing £££££ also the rotors themselves, otherwise that is about it so best case about £1100 for rebuild parts, but it could be up to £3000+ if you need to replace everything.

Loud? Hell yes! :D

You should make 300 atw I would have thought. I made 280 atw with all of the above except the street port so 280 + whatever the port will add, not sure if you might need to upgrade fuelling after a port though ? Mine are on the limit without.

Hi Chris,

There really isn\'t that many of them of them in Scotland, I can go weeks without seeing another one, but then I\'m in Forfar and not much ever happens here.

I got mine done at WGT (link at the top of page) last year after my rebuild, but I will definately take it back there when I start to modify it. Pip knows what he is doing and he will keep the engine safe, give you advice etc.

Hope your project goes well

Barry
