Was having a chat with a mate last night who maps cars but not RX\'s. He advised I can run the car on 95 ron and then get it mapped to run on normal unleaded. I said no you cant has to be a minimum of 97 due to detonation in the engine. He said adjust the timing and ignition and it will be safe to run.

I thought all jap import cars had to run on 97+.

Can someone please explain if 1. you can map it to 95 and what are the advantages or disadvantages  of doing this and 2. No way can you run it on 95 ron and why

Cheers

Yes he is right.
You can map to 95, you wont be able to run as much high boost, and retard the timing slightly to safegaurd against knock.
Disadvantage less power, you may get less mpg, advantage you buy and run the cheaper fuel safely.

The difference betwene the UK & Jap cars is the ECU mapped for 95Ron + a pre cat for emissions.

UK car = 237Bhp
Jap = 255Bhp +

So what he ^ said :D

mine was mapped to 95ron by the previous owner and made 330+ rwhp on stock twins at 1.1bar and no porting, it was dynoed with 98 for safety but I used 95 or 98 at the pump without any issues as it was a daily drive. Now it\'s my second car and i\'ve made a few changes recently it\'ll be remapped with just 98 in a month or two, the comparison should be a good indicator still though. This wont fix the problem I have with the local garage running dry on 98 every other week though so will need some thought put into my driving routes :)   Hope that helps one way or another, nothing to fear in mapping to 95.

Stock twins, 330rwhp, 1.1 bar, 95 ron.................

Sounds a lot to ask from 95 ron fuel - are you really sure it was mapped for 95? Sounds like you put 98 ron in for the 1.1 bar? I can understand using 95 for lower boost though.

yer, well.. you could ask Ant / db2boy if you see him trundling by in his 4x4s. But he said it was mapped to 95, and I had dynoed at geoffs couple years back.

Edit : It ran 330+ atw with 98, but never saw any problem (although unadvisable) hitting 1.1bar, max injector load, with 95. I\'ll bring it down for the remapping later this year and we can have a look at the map.

good figures mate, what mods do you have to achieve that on stock twins>? cheers Bob

eh up, the usual stuff to make a car ready for a single tubby apart from porting but im in no rush for that, made a few changes since so should be looking at a few more ponies and, like i said, map it to 98 :)

These were with the car when I bought it, pretty sure Ant rebuilt the engine to standard spec, the turboes were new a few years ago after he tried antilag and the old pair objected ..

Apexi FC + Commander
Apexi Skyline GT-R Fuel Pump
Apexi GT-Spec Intercooler
Apexi Intake Kit
Efini Y Pipe
No Airpump, aircon.
Sx Fuel Regulator
Earls braided fuel hoses and aluminium fittings
Blitz Nur Spec R Exhaust
Straight Through Midpipe
No boost controller.
Stock injectors 550/850.
Stock radiator.

There\'s probably something im missing there so may edit it in a bit :)

Maybe Apexi ECU overreads to 1.1bar? Although that\'s what we left it sat at. The blitz boost controller I had read a little lower.

Next time it\'s remapped it wont have the old PS pump, water injection, larger secondaries, blitz boost SBC Solenoid and MMD controller and a heck of a lot of stuff that wont make a blind bit of difference to the performance just a gaping hole in my already well worn wallet.

nikp

If there\'s no boost controller, how did it run 1.1 bar? I\'m not saying it didn\'t, i\'m just curious as to how it managed it

GerbilStuntFarm

Apexi ecu\'s can handle the boost, but as you can see in the dyno not very smoothly.

Smifta

Don\'t want to be a naysayer, but are you sure you mean 330 rwhp? That\'s getting close 400 bhp at the flywheel.

310 atw. Stock twins. Mazdaspeed GT-Concept.

That\'s why i included the chart above, that\'s at the wheels as are all of reworx dyno runs. 330 rwhp with twin tubs isnt unusual, Wavs is up there (non-seq). Warthogs is a fair bit higher albeit at 1.3bar (think it\'s sequential).

The car\'s tuned on 95, runs fine with 95 or 98, and makes 330rwhp and set at 1.1bar of boost at ecu level and maxes out the injectors. Geoff at reworx knew the car and may remember it for the doubters out there.

Smifta

In that case! Nice numbers :)
