Guys,

Why is it when the car goes out of warranty the gremlins come out and play havoc on you !!!

Basically I was driving home and got the ABS light come on and could hear a whirring noise, got home turned the ignition off and the noise still persisted

Opened the bonnet and its the ABS unit area thats making the noise.

If I take the ABS fuse out the ABS unit etc stops.

I have washed the car today but thats it, could it be moisture on a sensor ?

Any other ideas ? What do I need to try or check for ?

Cheers,

Gareth

Well, followed Mrfitz advice:

"If your ABS pump is going constantly, the only thing I think it realistically could be (apart from dodgy wiring) is the ABS motor relay.
Look on the ABS hydraulic unit and lift the almost square cover off. It\'s a bit fiddly to move out of the way because of the hyd pipes but it will go. There should be 2 relays under there. The bigger one is the ABS motor relay. Pull it out. They are in quite tight so it may need a bit of jimmying with a screwdriver, you may break some of the plastic but don\'t worry. Give it a solid bang a few times and a good old shake and then put it back in again. Start the car, go for a spin, use the ABS and hopefully the motor will be working as advertised. Also, check your brake fluid levels are ok too. If the pump is still going, take the relay out with the engine running and see if it stops or not. Don\'t leave the pump running for too long though!"

Took out the relay, gave it a knock a few times put it back, put the fuse back, heard a loud click and then nothing....silent.
Turned on the ignition electrics and off and still nothing. Tried a different fuse to make sure it wasnt blown....still nothing.

Fingers crossed thats it fixed, will give the car a run this arvo and let you guys know.

If it is fixed I owe Mrfitz a beer or 3.

Hurrah, took the car out for a spin and it appears to be working again touch wood.

Very happy,

Hi mate,

Hope you\'ve been cracking on with the dash today? ;)

Search turned up your thread cos this happened to me (for the 2nd time since I\'ve had the car) yesterday. With the ignition off the buzzing didn\'t stop so opened the bonnet and gave the black box to the right of the main ABS kit a sharp tap and the noise stopped :)

BTW does anyone know how bad this issue actually is? Does it stop the ABS from working while the fault occurs?

Cheers,
Alex

When I had my problems I must confess I didnt try seeing if the abs came on. Best bet is to get another one if you are unsure, although I dont know how much they are from Mazda. Not gonna say anything about mine since doing the above.....just in case !!!

Hope you are well mate.
