Hi there,

My current rubber engine mounts are garbage. Got a pair of replacement ones this morning. My question is, how do i remove the old ones from the metal \'legs\' that they\'re attached to? There\'s a metal belt holding them on, but doesn\'t seem to want to slide off - is it just due to the existing rubber mounts disintergration?

Thanks for any help! :p

Bump, bump - need to know how to do this!

Have you looked in the workshop manual? Sorry I haven\'t a link goto rx7city.com

Think you will have to lift the engine, unbolt the mounts from engine and disassemble on the bench. Engine crane time. If you sue a jack don\'t dent the sump or you could block the pickup.

Let me know how you do it if you can as I need to do the same.

Hey, where and how much were the new mounts??

I already have the engine out. Just gotta to try and replace the rubber.

i didn\'t think you could replace just the rubber, i thought the thing came as a complete unit, i have to do one of mine but will use a hoist to do it, i\'d be too worried about the sump, the only problem i have heard of is that it is easy to cause the sump to leak oil by unbolting the old one, i hope i\'m wrong! Tim will know of course,or perhaps one of the tech guys will be along with an answer soon.
Good luck, i would like to know how you get on please.

Dunno - but i have a pair of just the rubber bits. It looks like all youi need to do is slide the ally strap off, remove the old rubber mount, replace with new one, and slide metal strap back on. However, time will tell whether this is actually the case!

will let you know if it works!

(p.s. The rubber mounts cost me £10 each, plus vat and delivery from JapScene as scene (pun indended! :p) above in the vendors section.

Well that\'s brilliant, if it would save disturbing the bolts through the sump, just a matter of finding out how they go in then Nik. hope someone who knows comes along soon,

i thought the threaded bits are cast into the rubber.   When i replaced mine with nylon ones (which i\'m about to take out) i replaced the whole unit.....

I have just ordered mazda speed ones for my FC and they are complete

maybe ring Japscene
400 BHP - 650 KG\'s = 616 BHP Per Ton of Rotary Power

That\'s the way to do it! :Thumbsup!

Just checked in my workshop manual to see if there is any reference to renewing the rubbers in the engine mounts, and it doesn\'t,they seem to be as one complete unit, with the rubbers bonded in (IIRC.) there is a bracket with 3 bolt holes that bolts on to the sump.and a threaded bolt from the rubber centre that goes through the sub frame, my passenger side (they are handed L&R ) rubber has detached itself from the housing it\'s in, which is why i have to replace the whole bracket, someone correct me if i\'m wrong please, could you check with Tim Nik? if you\'r in touch with him,
cheers

Well, i guess i\'ll find out tomorrow. When i contacted JapScene and made sure i was specifically that they were FD engine mounts, and they confirmed they are. The rubber ones i have are very similar in appearance to the ones i have in the whole unit.

but i do fear they are one complete unit. But there is an anternative: If they are bonded, then i think i may grind the remnants out, and drill a whole in the matel leg, so that i can thread the rubber mounts through the hole, and bolt in. Should hopefully work!! We\'ll see.

I\'ll let you know!

Ok, just managed to get the ally strap off - and yes, the rubber mount is bonded to the metal leg. I don\'t understand - the rubber mounts that i do have look very, very similAR - You can even see where the strap went before! But the rubber replacement mounts i have, have a threaded stud at BOTH ends! Not too sure what to do here. I shall post pictures up tomorrow.

The turbo/drivers side mount has a bolt / stud running all of the way through the rubber and ally bracket. The passenger side has the rubber bonded to the ally mount, and this is the one that always fails. A secret squirrel cheap fix is to find another drivers side mount from a breaking fd or similar and replace the bonded passenger side with that. The mount will bolt straight on and all you have to do different is to remove the heat shield. Another advantage is that the engine is much more soid now you\'re using two drivers side mounts with the studs going all of the way through  :cheers

Hope that helps,

Paul

Brilliant tip thanks Paul.

What i may do, is to get an engineering shop to weld on a plate onto the bonded one, whereby i can bolt the engine mount to that in a conventional way.
