Hi there

Only two weeks into ownership of an RX 7 and I am having problems - BRING IT ON!!

The rad light and buzzer came on, and never went off, the needle kept creeping, so I drove straight to dealers were I bought car. At this stage there was loads of steam ****ing out of engine. They wired her up and the next day called me to say I needed a new water pump, thermostat and rad. Next day they tell me I need a rebuild and today they tell me I may have boiled part of the engine!

The car is under warranty so the garage is picking up the bill. They reckon it was rebuilt 20,000 ago, but that the seals may not have been changed. (Import).

I am getting the hump now, cos I its been there a week and we still dont know whats actually wrong.

Any ideas?

If you cooked it then it will most probally need a rebuild, If its under warrenty you are gona get a nice rebuild or at worst a replacement engine!!!

well if they said it needs a rebuild then that\'s your simple answer to what is wrong with it!
If you want to know why it went tits up, I think the water pump failing could probably cause the overheating, or a coolant leak could do it, but all of these would be fixed by the garage so I wouldnt worry too much and just get the garage to fix it sharpish in time for RS3!

As soon as the stock temp gauge starts to move - it\'s shafted. It means its reached 129C - the coolant is boiling at said point which will warped the rotor housings which are alloy where the inter plates are cast iron. Like boiling your boinger - warped cylinder head.

If anyone reads this who are new to FD\'s - if the coolant alarm goes off: Stop the engine immediately! Do not try and get home. Whats cheaper? Getting a tow truck home and sorting the leak, or rebuilding, and replacing nearly every single component in your engine!

I could not agree more with the above advice!!!!!  The water temp gauge is not Linear, so it doesnt move as the water temps go up and down so dont think \'its only gone up a little as its already over heating as soon as it moves.
400 BHP - 650 KG\'s = 616 BHP Per Ton of Rotary Power

That\'s the way to do it! :Thumbsup!

Sound advice peeps,

If you have a Power FC unit you are going to see the water temp soar alot quicker than without it, happen to my car when the rad was leaking 2 years ago, water temp jumped up to 105oC on the motorway which shouldn\'t happen, pulled over straight away got tow truck home changed rad same engine still working today  :cool

If you don\'t have a power FC, it\'s defo worth fitting a aftermarket water temp guage,
best mod iv\'e done to mine.
good luck with the car,
