Hi there,

Where does the standard airbox get its air from? Engine bay, or cold air feed from front of car?

Cheers, Paul.

MillSpeed

There\'s a cold air feed that runs from the intecooler ducting to the airbox.

Interesting! Does that mean aftermarket induction kits (such as the apexi intake) actually provide hotter air into the engine?

I guess this disadvantage must be made up for by volume of air?

Cheers, Paul.

MillSpeed

Yeah, without some form of shielding they\'ll be sucking up lovely hot air that\'s just come through the rad!

Martiny

There is a duct just behind the numberplate to feed the intercooler and the airbox.

Yes, I am afraid that the aftermarket kits will draw hot air from the engine bay. The standard air box is far superior in my opinion. I doubt there is much advantage with a kit. Any advantage is negated by the increased risk of detonation (if you ask me).

This is very interesting indeed!  :cheers  I was thinking of getting an aftermarket kit, too...

Is there any way to improve the airflow in the std airbox?

Cheers, Paul.

K&N do a high-flow filter for the standard air box. Should liberate quite a few more ponies.

Excellent news!

Ta, Paul.

I decided to just go for a K&N in the standard airbox on mine. Saves insurance hassles too.

Previous FD had the RE-Ameya Simesed Filter and and it did sound really nice though.

Could try this:

It\'s an interesting way off adding another cold air intake to the std air box, whilst also retaining the original split inlet from the intercooler.

Remember that the later, post 99 cars had their cold air inlet split away from the intercooler, so both air box and IC had dedicated intakes, so none of this interheating effect that has occasionally been mentioned. The intake in the later designs is taken from the bumper cavity!

Very interesting!

The only thing missing from that link is pictures. Does anyone have any pictures to show what the guy is talking about in his doc?

Cheers, Paul.

Not sure if you would gain anything by doing that "mod", unless you were using high revs alot of the time. Never seen any pics, although it is pretty easy to carry out. I did it years ago on a previous FD, just an afternoons work. I did it more out of peace of mind than anything performance related. I\'ve got a post99 FD now, so no need to do it again!  :Giggle
