Been scratching on the 7.......when I start it up then the rev counter has a nervous breakdown,it reads 9000 rpm,the dash looks like its xmas again with all the lights on......alt,water,oil refuse to go off.Had this before and the system corrected itself  ?????
However now it refuses to give and play ball.........the VDO\'s read all okay, hooked 2nd rev counter and that behaves itself.

What did I do diff ?..installed vdo\'s and differ starter motor,I systematically disconnected all that is new but the prob is still there.. :Hammer
the 7 runs like it should,no probs apart from the muppet show on the dash... :Typing

Please help all you clever boys out there................... :wave

don\'t the series 1\'s use the tacho as a volt meter when it starts up ? it has rpm and volts on the gauge

oldone

Yes Mike, when I put on indicators or lights then the tacho goes down to say 6000rpm.When you put the ignition on,then it will read the voltage for you, crank and start and then the tacho takes over and all lights go off....... :Typing

MikeLMR

what causes the change over ? Is it somthing linked in with the charge warning system ? (ie. alt starts charging and all the idiot lights go out and the tacho takes over)

oldone

Really dont squire..can weld,port,paint,build...but stupid with advanced electrics.... :flamed

MikeLMR

the series 1 wiring diagram shows the tacho and quite a few of the lights connected to one side of the charge warning light and that being connected to pin L of the regulator under the bonnet (presume its a seperate unit as its an early car)

I\'ve no idea which connection Pin L is, but its somthing to check ? I suppose the regulator could be faulty ?

Theres also somthing to do with a choke relay built into the regulator that seems to be linked in with the charge warning system ... seeing as most of the emmisions stuff has been taken off this could be the culprit ?

oldone

Thanks Mike...thats a mouthfull and will check that all tomm afternoon....it seems it is not switching over from voltmeter to tacho.....which kinda points to the charge system.Thanx again... :cheers

Been speaking with Era Mike he\'s having a problem getting the tick over down, last time he had a high tick over he experienced similar probs could there be a rev threshold he has to drop below to compleat the self check cycle and swap from volt meter to tacho mode thus taking off all the self check lamps at the same time.

this one sounds similar ...

I don\'t think its as complicated as an rpm cut off, its all down to the charge warning system from what I can understand.

Looks like i\'m going digging in the shed for a alternator and regulator for the old sod then.

Thanx bud....that is the prob exactly described...however I have had the prob before and it righted itself without me interfering at all, going to slacken off v belt so it slips and see if I can get the alti to charge less or go for a bigger alt pully and slow things down ?????
Even ran the motor with alti unpluged to see !!! prob was still the same.............. :Hammer

oldone

Thanx me ol Kev...will give a shout when its time to put new gear on the lil 12A...... :wiggle

Problem sorted.......... :cheers  :cheers  :cheers ,got in the car this morn, didi the normal ritual, fired up and the dash became a total disco...flashing on and off lights, rev counter going ballistic but keeping in tune with the lights.
My thoughts were, either you come right or i am going to break you today.Next instant all lights off,rev counter happy as a bunny at normal rpm....even the fuel gauge worked, got more fuel than what i thought.. :rollin
Thanx for all the input guys....all I did was shout at it and prob solved.....so will be making a voice recording..£5.00 to charity of your choice........ :Talking1
