New Fd Owner, First Impressions

I have just taken delivery of my first REX, a 1992 Type R, I can\'t believe how quick and how linier the power delivery is.  I have heard how thirsty they are but did expect more than 200kms to a full tank of fuel! Looking forward to some dry weather when I can really see how she flies.

You must have some mods under there.

Mine is standard and I get 350 to 450klms.
Depending on driving conditions.

But yes, we love the super smooth no stopping power delivery.

Biston engine goes Boing Boing Boing.
Rotary Engine goes Hmmmmmmmm.

I\'ve got a Veilside back box and an induction kit but as far as I know that is about it.  
Normally on a turbo car you get a noticeable kick when the turbo kicks in, but I havn\'t noticed it on mine, is that normal??

yes you should feel a kick at about 4,000 rpm thats about when the second turbo comes in.

I do notice a scary increase in power that normally results in the back stepping out violently but not the normal kick I always had in normal turbo cars, maybe that\'s a characteristic of the rotary engine??? My fuel economy is worryin me tho!

i was the same when i first got mine that second kick is crazy !
word of advice be carefull in the wet rx-7+wet dont mix too good.


fuel economy is crazy yes then again i did not buy a rx7 and worry about the fuel economy i have a 950cc feista for that ! LOL !

is your engine stock ? any mods to it?  have you got a boost gauge?

other than exhaust and induction kit it is standard, I actually have the standard airbox on there at the mo, it doesn\'t make much difference anyway.  I\'ve got a boost guide, it never seems to show above 1bar - is this normal?

yes this sounds normal 1 bar is about 14.5 Psi so just under that is good !

mine boosts at 0.8 (11psi) on the first turbo  and

0.7 (10psi) on the second turbo sometimes boosts at 0.8 on the second when it feels like it !

but mine is stock except for a mazda speed back box, and hks SQV, and hard pipes.


what reading do you get when the second turbo boosts up?
(if you have time to look !)

1 BAR thats more then standard!! 10-11psi is standard
Make sure you have an upgraded ECU for 1 bar boost!

I have heard that re-fitting an aftermarket induction kit will not give any real power increase/change in responsiveness.  Has anyone else got any views or experience?

hmmm makes a slight difference on stanbdard boost, but more benefit on higher boost applications, but heat from the engine may negate the gains unless you have a heat sheild or a proper cold air intake pipe direct to the filters.
Did you check if you had an upgraded ECU for the 1 bar boost you are running?

I have had mine for a month now and believe me the word economy doesn\'t really apply to the rx:)

I have a type r 1992 with a few mods under the bonnet. Arc airbox and aftermarket intercooler and hardpipe conversion, the guys that imported it for me reckon its got about 280bhp, but i will wait and see as its going on a rr in feb.

Its definitley a car you have to treat with respect in anything other than dry roads!! Have had a few close one\'s already!

The ARC airbox is a quality bit of kit coz it shields the heat away from the air intake, when you get it RR get the guy to check the ECU, if it is aftermarket then it should have a plaque or sticker on it of the tuner in japan.
If i hammer my car I just about managed to get 200 miles to a tank and if i drive it gently about 260 miles

Cheers for the tip, will do. All the documentation is obviously in japanese so i can only confirm what i can see under the bonnet, anyone good at translating?

My speedo and clock have stopped working (waiting on a new convertor chip, its the third one so it better work!!) so i am still to see how many km i can get to a tank, hopefully i will get the new chip this week. Whenever i get it i can confirm what i know already, its a thirsty beast!! but i love it!

Looks like the 1bar boost was a guage problem, now seems to have settled to around .8 - very strange, I am going to change the pipe as soon as I can find some.  This car is awesome.
Had a problem starting yesterday which seemed like flooding but turned out to be alarm based.  Thanks to Brian Ellis I actually managed to get it started finally, if you are looking for a new toy he is the man to see - not many importers are happy with you calling them at 9pm!!!! - thanks a million.
