Well im finally gonna take the plundge and get an FD.
I plan to see this car friday but an a bit worried about the engine.

Its on 65k and has apparently had a rebuild but there is no paper work to back this up nor is there a compression test. :(
Its also been modded with hks exhausts and filters as well as blitz dump valves, but i dont think its been mapped for the mods.
Im thinking i will have to factor a cost of a rebuild into my buget.
Is there anything i can do wothout tools to see it the motor is about to go pop?
Ive read all the buying guides but any other advice would be very welcome.

Many thanks iain

Gman

Just my opinion but if you in anyway uncertain then walk away, there are plenty about with the evidence of rebuilds/history etc.  That is unless you paying not a lot for it then it my be worth it, as if you can afford the rebuild you get the millage until it goes bang for free! (well almost if you know what i mean)

I agree. My advice would be to go for one that has a proven engine rebuild and is still warranteed by one of the vendors on this site.

For example this one:

This has been mapped with all the mods already on, running at a safe boost and does look quite stunning.
:)

That way, you know what you\'re paying and there won\'t be any hidden surprises. This would definitely be a good buy for you, especially seeing as I\'ve just seen a car I like :)

Not that I\'m trying to lead the witness or anything ;)

Hmmmm take a look at the sellers feedback! Looks like he could be a bit of a lad! lol

Thanks chaps...sorry gadj yours is a bit out my price range.
I think this 1 will only be worth it if the rest of the car checks out and it comes at a good price.

Can you go and view it and get a compression test done while you\'re there? Definately don\'t buy without one... :Thumbs-up

Ta, Paul.

Surely he should know who the rebuild was done by? If he doesnt know, Id say walk away. Most of the rotary tuners Ive spoken to have been very helpful when it comes to checking history of cars. Try ringin round a few and give them the reg no...if they have rebuilt an engine for a car with that reg no, they should have it on file.

gadj

Thought you were talking about me then Avityesboy ;) Geeze, never looked at his feedback. That\'s terrible.

I\'d be real careful Iain, which ever one you go for. Thing is with these cars, you could end up buying one cheap and paying the same price as one that was considerably more expensive. It\'s not just the rotor tips that can go wrong.

The vendors on here sometimes they have some more reasonably priced ones, and can often offer some kind of warranty. They have a reputation to uphold on this site, so are not gonna sell you a duff\'n. It\'d hurt their sales otherwise.

Yep, ill agree with that, i bought mine cheap with a blown engine, from ebay too, and although i knew id have to spend some to rebuild the engine, and other bits and pieces, its ended up where it would have been cheaper and easier to buy one I knew was right in the first place! Sorry, gonna name drop now, but Carl Hayward (Hayward Rotory) has a couple of nice ones at the mo, one of which i should have bought really! Not saying dont do it, but buying off ebay has cost me more than I thought, but still worth every penny!
Good luck whatever you decide to buy, and keep us informed!

Indeed. You could pay £4-5k for a really ordinary looking RX7 that blows up in a month. Factor in 3k for an engine rebuild, maybe a bit more for any extra things that might have gone wrong.

You\'re then looking close to the 8-9k mark, which with a strategic offer ;) is around the same price as mine which still has a warranteed engine rebuild and has had any niggles sorted out under the 6 month warranty I had on the rest of the car.

And it looks good! Hey, is this the for sale section? ha ha! what you selling yours for anyway gadj? if you dont mind my asking? sorry, i should post in the newbies section really and introduce myself so people know who i am, but not got any nice car pics yet so havnt got round to it!
Andy

Yeah, its in the for sale section as well ;-). No harm advertising when you get the chance though :)

It\'s up for £10.5k at the mo\', and wasn\'t in any hurry, but just seen a car I like today, so might be tempted on an offer.
