Guys,
I was changing rear brake pads at the weekend when I noticed several nice holes in the piping between the Y-pipe and the back box. Joy. A little "gentle prodding" around these holes soon resulted in a single large one.

I\'ve patched it for now but the end is in sight got this exhaust. I\'m tempted to go for a £400 racing beat system which look really nice but is too pricy to justify (1/3rd the value of the car?).

So.... before I take the plunge, just checking - does anyone have any spare back boxes/Y-pipe that they are trying to sell? I\'ve tried in the wanted section with no luck. Also if anyone else has changed their exaust system I would like to know what you did and how easy it was.

Cheers.

I am about to change my rear boxes,  they are currently stainless universal rear silencers that have done about 1000 miles.  If you are willing to buy the whole rear section from the mid box back, i will have the lot changed not just the rear boxes.  It is 3" stainless into the Y peice which is 2 stainless 2.5 inch pipes to the rear boxes. It will fit onto a stock turbo II and flowed enough for 385 BHP at the wheels.

The only problem i can see is you are in Newcastle and i am in Essex.  It would be Heavy if you cant collect and its in one peice.
400 BHP - 650 KG\'s = 616 BHP Per Ton of Rotary Power

That\'s the way to do it! :Thumbsup!

i got some decent after market back boxes you can have although i dont know what make but they look pretty similar to cherry bombs and they have a 2.5 inch tail pipe. 50 quid for the pair mate. they sound nice without being too offensive. im in Doncaster about an hour away from you. they bolt right onto the standard y pipe.

Thud

Guys - thanks for the offers.

Antnicuk - I\'m interested in your set up but I think the distance might be a bit of a passion killer. If I can think of a creative way of getting a full exhaust system across the country I will let you know.

TurboIInuttah - I could also be interested in your back boxes. I just need to get a new Y-pipe as well. Someone butchered mine doing some repairs so one of the back boxes is now welded to it. I will let you know how I get on finding a Y-pipe. It is also a 240mile round trip from Newcastle to Doncaster so I will also have to weigh that up.

Cheers

i have an n/a (1988) that i think has useable y piece if its the same, if you think it is let me know and ill double check the condition and if its ok you can have it if you collect it. im in lincoln which is not to far from doncaster if you choose turbo11nutah\'s boxes. jon

I got a full stainless system, delivered from the US for £270 awhile back.  SSAUTOCHROME is the company, some people have said there welds etc are crap, but what I got was very high quality, if you dont mind it being a little bit on the noisey side then check it out.  They sell on ebay as well.

So - in the end I have ordered a cat back system from the US. I went for a Dynomax Turbo system which seems to go down well with American rotorheads. Paid $320 but I am still waiting for the shipping bill (-Gulp-).....

http://www.dynomax.com/

Used a company called Summit Racing who seem to be quite familiar with international shipping. I guess time will tell on that one.

Thud

OK - so my Dynomax system has arrived. Shipping cost a bloody fortune in the end  :xconfused . It looks pretty solid but the welding is definetly rough quality.

I\'m going to have a crack at installing it this weekend. Can someone tell me if I need to use exhaust paste as well as the normal gaskets or do the gaskets do a good enough job by themselves?

Oh, and what are the chances of me snapping a stud on the main cat? I really don\'t want to live through that sort of pain.....

Thanks
Stuart

grinder

chances of snapping studs - YES

i used normal gaskets from mazda - about £6 each though

have a look for a thead of mine about the de-cat - will show you what you are in for :D

Stu

best idea to do drop the whole exhaust then work on it - 3 bolts on the turbo and thats it - should only take you an hour to get it off :D

ohhhhhhh - I just read your thread and that looked NASTY. Still, I\'m sure it must have felt amazing when you finally popped that broken stud out. These things can only make us stronger!

Was it the stud on the main cat which broke on you? If so then it\'s likley I could have the same problem - I need to separate the Y-Piece from the main cat so I guess this is the same type of stud system.

grinder

the stud that snapped was on the exhaust side of the down pipe

im sure the exhaust on mine is 4 peice

1 - turbo back cat ( now decat )
2 - pipe to main cat
3 - cat
4 - full peice to end

yours is prob 5 peices - with No 4 being split at the tail pipes ( my tail pipes are welded onto the Y pipe )

the stud snapped on mine between peice 1 and 2

like i said - get underneath - remove the 3 nuts off the turbo - remove split air pipe - drag exhaust out

THEN work on it - its a nightmare to do under the car

and do what i did - take it to an exhaust place and see if they will looses the nuts for you ( easy to get a 2 foot breaker bar under when its on a 4 post ramp !! )

get car home - remove exhaust - spray with penetrating fluid and split what you need to

failing that - get exhaust off in one peice - get angle grinder - remove studs and put everything back with nuts and bolts ( at least this way you can cut the heads off in future and knock them out )

happy playing though :) - its really annoying to do but worth it in the end :D

will this make your car fully decatted then ??

I\'m happy to announce that my nuts are lying on my garage floor and my stud is in tact. Both nuts freed up easily enough but soon jammed as I started to loosen them. A guy in work who is a ex-motormechanic had given me a great piece of adive which worked really well - loosen five turns, tighten back up three turned and then clean the threads with a wire brush. This worked a treat and eventually they popped of.

I will pull the exhaust out and hopefully refit the new one over the weekend!

Thud

Well, that\'s that one put to bed. The new exhaust is in and it only took me four hours.....

Bit of a nightmare getting the new y-piece onto the cat studs but it went on ok in the end. Much to my satisfaction one of the old back boxes fell off as I was removing it - so this definetly was the right time for a new cat back. The new Dyno-Max system sounds fantastic.

I painted the exhaust with high temperature paint in a (probably vain) attempt to prolong its life. Took the car out this morning and when I parked on the driveway noticed a nice cloud of smoke coming out of the bonnet. It was only then I read the paint instructions which says you need to gently warm the car to cure the paint and not horse it like I did. Looks like I cooked some of the paint - oh well.

grinder

looks nice matey !!

so what cats has the car got now ?
