Have been thinking about building a air box for my FD, i have got a GReddy Air Intake kit fitted and have seen on here in the past a few people making there own air boxes to try and decrease heat getting into the filters.  Was gona try and get hold of a sheet of carbon fibre but is quite expensive for small sheets, anyone know where i can get some? or is there another material which would be just as effective?

Also anyone got any templates or anything for when they have built theres?

Cheers  :chat

Found these pics, on past posts. Might be usefull :Tongue1

looks good, thats the sort of thing im after, any suggestions on best material to use?? crbon fibre?? if i can find a cheap sheet if that is possible lol.

G@NDY

Not sure really. I reckon that if you found some sheet carbon it would be really hard to cut and make anything, and it is really harmful if you inhale any of the fibres. Metal would be the easiest, sheet Aluminium. I think if you made the box you want, the get it powder coated, this would possible further decrease the chance of heat soak!!!!! and look reeeeeeeeet good. Other than that you could make it out of sheet plastic, as that would the cheapest bet. :Tongue1

sounds good cheers mate, might try the plastic or aluminium approach would be alot easier and less expensive, will see wot i can do

how about perspex??? or would that just melt with the heat?? was thinkin i could get some thick perspex then paint it with heat resistant paint, think that will work??

Hello mate.

Have you thought of making it from fiber glass. I would try and imitate the sp air box if possible or at least the m2 air box.

I made my own intake system for my fd which works very well and is fully adjustable in length. The intake has to balance with the exhaust. Its a harmonic thing.

Have a look at this stuff, I think it was developed for aeronautical use but now it’s more widely available. Do a search for Nimbus GII heat shield or follow this link to see it’s properties.

Hope it helps

this heat shield is designed for the apexi but you can prob modify to your own tastes http://www.rx7club.com/showthread.php?t=164836&highlight=heat+shield

I don\'t think the paint will make any difference, the paint itself will survive, but it won\'t prevent the perspex getting hot. I\'d go for aluminium or fibreglass (been thinking about doing the same thing myself, making a buck out of MDF and then glassing from that). With the kind of temperatures we\'re talking about, aluminium should make a big difference even though its conductive compared to fibreglass.

I\'m thinking about doing the same thing for my apexi induction kit. My theory is to make it out of stainless, becaues it is more ductile than fibre glass, i.e. if you don\'t get it right first time (which I won\'t) you can shape it to fit perfectly. I was then going to layer the inside with some kind of insulation stuff to stop it getting hot in the box, as metal is a good conductor of heat.

I wouldn\'t worry too much about metal being a conductor, unless someone else has experience to the contrary. The main problem normally as I see it is hot air under the bonnet getting drawn into the intake. The main concern is keeping the intake air and the hot air separate. I don\'t think that heat transfer from the hot air, to the heat shield, through the heat shield, and then into the intake air will be a huge problem. The othe rthing is to make sure there is a line of sight shield between the intake and any really hot metalwork, in my experience on other similar problems a single sheet of stainless steel makes a significant difference :) PS, I\'d love to see photos / sketches of what people come up with a this is on my sprong to-do list...

You can buy sheets of carbon fiber from 3M - It was sold through Demon Tweeks last time I looked  :)
