After looking at various options for doweling engine I decided to try this option. Using oversize precision ground engine bolts from HERE (see under engine services). It is then neccesary to machine plates and housing to a clearance fit. Result one strong engine ( I hope).

First off getting all the hole coordinates...

Very. Did the machine have a probe on it or did you program it with the aid of a dti ?? Always wondered how they dowel an engine. Also surely if you have access to cnc machines you could make your own dowel pins, although what material and heat treatment is required and if the threads are rolled or thread cut is a big issue.

Only other big worry would be heat differential between the bolts and the housings. Although that will definately lock the housings into place more !

Very interesting indeed. Plus you are definately brave :)

MikeLMR

seems rude not to bridgeport those irons when they are nicely set up like that :D

Whats the plan with the motor then ? high boost, high revs ? just for peace of mind or somthing else ?

Carl

That is the method I have been using for years, except I make my own bolts too.

could you do me a big favour mate?
did you clock of the bore as x 0  and y 0 as your centre line datum?
if so can you send me your co ordinates of  all the hole centres please  as im going to do mine soon.
also what size drill did you use and where did you get your studs from?
ps- ive got  a hydenhain or fanuc program for a proved bridge port all done if you want it using circuler centre and polar angle datumed of the  bore!
clock it up and away you go using 8mm slot drill
this is done of a proved template exactly mate and you will get identical ports on each housing :rollin
what controls are u on?

Cool, you two are really lucky to have the access to types of machines. Im behind a desk now with solid edge so don\'t get to use stuff like this anymore.

I\'d reconmend you dti all your holes on the part, there may be some slight difference in bore positions and you might flex the end mill when you plunge it into the bore.

I used to run 3 dual chuck lathes with auto loading with a fanuc control. Play with horizontal and vertical milling machines too ! But that was a while ago.

The only thing that really worries me about the studs is that they are centreless ground instead of ground off centres. Although it might flex more between centres !

i was thinking of assembling the full block with original dowel pins, then drilling and reaming through with a long series drill and reamer then flipping it over and doing from the other side, then turn some high tensile studs down and screw cut the ends, then grind the studs od between centres to suit the reamed holes then hey presto.
ive milled my tips out to 3mm
plugged the 2 inter plate injector holes with threaded cast iron plugs so i can port up into them
milled exahust ports out with long series end mill (huge)
milled 4 bridge ports
just got to open inlet ports up on side plates and intermediate plate, they are a bit dificult to grip on an angle plate stood uprite.
all my ports will be exactly identical cause they are all milled out so im hoping this will reflect on power output :burnout
also making custom stainles plenum and 50mm runners with 100mm bore throttle body with a 2 rail 8 injector set up for good measure

need to think about turbo manifold yet with 60mm ext wastegate and huge turbo
see you all at rotorstock 3 :wave

Mike - I have already had half bridge port job (Thanks Tim). I have port matched the inlets to the gasket :)

Carl - I read on another forum that you were using same procedure :Thumbs-up

I used an old front plate as a fixture, located centre plate using original 16mm dowels to get the coordinates from the bolt holes(don\'t use housing positions they\'re not accurate). I helixed the holes through using a 12mm cutter on each plate/housing individually. Finally I tapped new threads in front plate.

As said before, excellent job
