I have just re-sealed my sump as it was leaking, i removed the warped gasket and used a quality sealant.  I tightened all bolts equally, not too tight then went round and tightend them all some more.  Some of the bolts (2 or 3) tightend ok then didn;t tighten anymore - is this normal?

They aren;t loose at all but they weren\'t tight enough for me to have broken anything.

As far as i could tell the leak was coming from one of the corners near the flywheel where some sealant had damaged the gasket.

sounds like you have threaded a few of the holes, if you can feel resistance but they dont ever seem to tighten then pull one out and look at the thread, you will soon see if its damaged, but bear in mind the bolt is going to be harder than the engine you are tapping into so even if the bolt is ok the bolt hole might not be. you can pick up a cheap tap and die set from any tool store or automotive shop to re thread the holes

Are all the bolts the same length? Could be if the two or three where slightly longer they\'ve bottomed out in the holes and won\'t be clamping the sump which could of been your problem in the first place.

I will check both those suggestions before the engine goes back in.  They are quite tight just not as tight as i would like.

if i remember rightly, ther are not the same length, the front ones are slightly longer and dont have thread all the way to the end as they come through the front cover
