Should I romove the standard airbox and replace it with the usual filter or just get a panel filter ?
Does it make a difference either way ?

tyson23

i would replace the whole lot mate its gonna be better with the usual hks filter due to no restrictions

I guess this will que the usuall debate!  :p   ;)  :D

I was looking on ebay and there is a single induction pipe for a RX-7 with two mushroom filters on it,would this be ok for a FC ?

i changed the air filter on my TII to a cone type and to be honest the only difference is the noise. i\'m still not sure if i\'ll keep it on.

You can change to most other induction kits and suck in hot air from the engine bay albeit freer flowing, or switch to a K&N to fit stock airbox, make it slightly freer flowing but keep it nice and cold, or K&N do a cold air box (apollo)

I would prefare cold air but the standard airbox cant be getting much air in ? Does the apollo replace the airbox ? Is it just a sealed filter ?

Just to add my 2p.  I\'ve run with both setups, the only way a non-airbox setup can work as efficiently is with a dedicated cold air feed, if you cant provide it with a decent air feed and some heat shielding then stick to using the mazda box with a free flow filter.

2qk4u, what makes you think the standard box is no good? I think there is a load of baloney hype around about the "restrictions" of intake systems. I think Gary\'s suggestion of using a K+N filter in the standard box is an excellent suggestion.

Either that or you need to get a kit that takes cold air from outside the car, again as said by Gary.

In my humble opinion, ( and I am humbled due to flaming!) the types that are just 2 sponges stuck on intake pipes are going to be worse, because they will draw hot air from the engine bay. Sorry but I think those are rubbish, and I apologise to vendors trying to sell them on here.

i have had induction kits on all my cars and the last one i fitted it to i noticed a DROP in performance!  im going to be going for a high flow filter panel this time. the rx makes enough noise with its 3" straight through exhaust!

I fitted twin apexi filters to my FD, and heatshield, and large ducting, not too impressed with temps, performance (athough not mapped) and noise, so now decided to go for K&n with the standard box and additional cold air feed into the bottom of the filter box. Have had k&n filters on some of my cars ive owned, and always had a good improvement, but of course they were not rotary engines.
Lead me not into temptation, I can find it myself...
But i can always do with some help now due to, my advancing years!

Im thinking standard airbox and good panel filter,I would prefare a direct cold feed replacement like the pipercross viper but cant afford something like that just now..... Do Rotarys run hotter or colder than standard engines ?

nikp

Depends what you mean by \'hotter\'. All engines are \'internal combustion engines\' and therefore contain exploding chemicals at hundreds of degree centigrade. Or do you mean the heat generated, and transferred to the surrounding areas such as oil, coolant and ancillaries? If so, then yes! :) Their thermodynamic properties are poorer, which also contribute to their high fuel consumption.

I have always been led to believe (ie : I don\'t necessarily think it\'s true) that the standard air box does the job well but are limited by the inlet to the airbox.  The cone filters will suck in air but the volume they suck in will empty the engine bay under acceleration in like 10ths of a second.  The air boxes are designed to be restrictive to premote different power/torque and consumption properties - thats pro the cones

I swapped mine for the cones and I honestly don\'t think it has made any performanc difference (although, who would feel an extra 5bhp when you already have 250ish?).  The only thing I have gained is a different look under the hood, you can now hear the return valve and the air being sucked in to the filters (and you only get the rasping noise on non-turbo cars)
