Can anyone enlighten me as to what is the actual size of the square number plate I need for the rear of the car.

Also is it ok/legal to have 5 characters on top and 1 on the bottom, like this :

XXXXX
    X

Also.... has anyone had problems with stick on plates on the front?

Dont know the size, but its the regular size Jap rear so I imagine most plate places (not Halfords they are useless) will be able to sort it.  I got mine done easily enough.

As for the spacing, then no that is illegal.  If your plate is short enough though you can get in on one line like I did with mine.

13 x 6.5 inch is the standard jap size.

does the rule regarding front number plate, (ie your allowed to keep the smaller sized jap plate) still apply if you change the front bumper and therefore have room for a normal size plate?

talking about imports in case im causing confusion:)

As far as i know the answer is yes, i think recently it changed to allow inports to have slighly smaller numbers so they fitted the plate size better. I would not worry too much though, my front plate is tiny, it all stems from being a biker!!!! I have never been stopped for a number plate being too small (directly), i have been stoped for other things and they always mention the plate and say get it changed but never issue a correction notice, and as far as i know, its only a small fine and non points endorsable. I once had a copper stop me on my bike after i had almost been knocked off by a car and cause in his words "he had been told to get bikes tonight" i got well pissed off and caused a scene when he mentioned my small number plate, i actually argued at the road side when he said i would get points on my license for a small number plate, i told him i wanted to get some points for the alleged offense but never got any.

The rule states that you can have a bike sized plate if your car is an import and there is not sufficient space for a full size plate.

So if your new bumber has space for a full size plate then legally it must go on I\'m afraid.

that not 100% accurate is it? I know you can get smaller plates if it\'s a "certain" import as per http://www.hmso.gov.uk/si/si2002/20022687.htm  & http://www.dvla.gov.uk/vehicles/regmarks/reg_marks_current_requirements.htm#import  but motorbike ones are aeven smaller are they not?
I know it can depend on who pulls you as to whether they get arsey but technically it would need to adhere to above links is my understanding Similarly i believe stick on are technically illegal but i think i will still try a decent sized sticky

PS that first link can aparently be quite nice to prinmt off keep in glove box & wava at oraphiser if they start telling you its too small (as long as it aint smaller than it says on that that is of course)

dictionary needed for Mr Si lol

Si, as copied and pasted from the second link you put above:

Import:

Character Height 64mm

Character Width 44mm

Character Stroke 10mm

Space between characters 10mm

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MOTORCYCLES AND TRICYCLES
Motorcycles and tricycles registered after 1.9.2001 must only display a number plate at the rear of the vehicle.
Motorcycles and tricycles registered before 1.9.2001 can display a number plate at the front but are not required to.
The characters may be smaller e.g.

Character Height 64mm

Character Width 44mm

Character Stroke 10mm

Space between characters 10mm

Fonts and spacings are the same :p

There may be different rules for the minimum gap outside the letters to the edge of the plate, but I\'ve never looked into this.

Tomson

so can anyone tell me where to get a stick on front number plate ?

think you can get from the main offenders such as GTgraphix etc although they do point out their lack of legality to cover their arses as i recall. the question was just replied to on FDUK i note as well, was that you n all? ;)

Just trying to get myself a new rear plate also.

Went to the local shop (for local people) and they don\'t do 13 by 6.5 inch.  Took my current plate off to measure it and that is 13 by 7 inches.

Still didn\'t get the plate cos they don\'t do the GB Euro for the Jap rears there.

Oh well.
