Have seen a couple of RX7s advertised on eBay over the past coupla months with the sellers stating that the car is "properly" registered as a 1,200cc or similar and therefore they pay less Vehicle Excise Duty.

Call me an old cynic, but my \'82 Rex is registered as 2,300cc and I can\'t see the DVLA allowing it to be registered as anything else. I know that the 12A designation of the engine means it is 1,200cc in rotary terms, but that it\'s equivalent to a 2,300cc piston engine (certainly drinks like one too).

Has anyone else seen ads claiming this?

Ant

Registered my old one as 1300.  Why not, the Jap De-reg forms you hand over to the DVLA say 1300 on them  ;)

Getting it changed after may be a different story though.

You never know unless you try! They downsized the cc\'s on my Cosmo without any problems. If you go onto Mazda\'s website address below http://www.mazda.com/history/rotary/graffiti.html
print out all the specs for your model car and you\'ve got an official mazda spec sheet listing it at the lower cc to send to them.

Perhaps we should all do that,Kevin,  it does seem a bit crazy that we are nearly all driving the same RX7 1.3 litre cars, as per Mazda spec\'s,
some are registered as 2-6 some 1-3! i guess the DVLA would catch on to that and raise everyone to 2-6,

It\'s true mate, my 98 has always been 1300cc on the log book.

some ppl on here have had their log books \'downsized\' using letters from Mazda, I think.

I started with nothing and I have most of it left

When registering my jap import I got WGT to produce a letter (cost my 5 pound) but it states the car is a 1.3 and DVLA excepted this and I get cheap road tax.

Worth the 5 quid, but it may work after the cars been registered anyone willing to try.

Hi Eddie, glad you got yours done at the right time, i am going to try this, it\'s such a crazy situation! i\'ll post how i get on, for the moment iv\'e got a 1-3 badge on the boot, so that\'s a start. lol

Didn\'t realise so many people had their\'s registered as 1,200/1,300cc. Will look into it myself! That\'s if I don\'t sell my car first....baby on way so cheap tax or not, a third car is a bit of an extravagence!

I changed mine no problem on the change cc section. No additional paper work was required

ro284

Kiwi, did you then insure it as a 1300cc?
cheers Bob

I changed mine to try and get into the 1300cc class for motorsport. then multiply  the engine size by 1.7 for that silly equivilancy thing and you get into th under 2.0 ltr class. Easy.
As far as insurance goes I got a quote for  classic car ins, 5000k, fully comp, 250 excess.    Â£170.00
I have only been driving in the UK for 6 years but have held a full licence for 23 years. God i,m old.
do I qualify for old sckool?
Hope that helps

I have finally got round to pinging an e-mail to the DVLA regarding this engine capacity malarky (I have decided not to sell my Rex after all).

I will let you know how I get on. Incidentally I dug out the original sales blurb with the technical specs sheet that states capacity as being 573cc x 2.
