Looking at getting a cheap FC 2nd gen rx7 as a run around/daily driver to save my rx from to many miles :D ! It will also probaly end up as abit of a drift project   :burnout

Had alook at the buying guide and know alittle bit, but what other things should I look out for and how much to spend??

Want something in good cond, thats not going to need a rebuild for awhile. Around a £1000- seem poss?? Not to worried if it needs some tidying up cosmetically, as it\'ll give me a lil\' project and learning to drift will prob end up with a few scrapes

Also can anyone give me any info on putting the FD twin turbo setup in an FC?? whats involved? Possible?- My thinking is long term here and to build/have built a top spec ported single turbo motor for my FD then transfer that engine to the FC when its needed.

Thanks in advance for input and advice!!

I think T2REW and Trex have the FD engine in their FC\'s, so you would be best off PMing them to ask whats involved.
In terms of what you can get for your money it depends on wether you want a Turbo II, convertible or Egi?
A half decent EGI may be had for around £1000 if you keep watching ebay, but I doubt you will get one with a good engine for less than £1500.  The EGI engine will last anywhere from 80-150k depending on how its been treated.  Always do the hot start test to be sure.
Most of the TII\'s and Cabs seem to have had engine replacements around the 80k mark, so that should be a guide for you.
TII\'s can be had for as little as £1500 and all the way upto £3500-4000 depending on condition.
Convertibles can reach as much as £5000....

Thanks brett,

Have seen some, what I think are egi\'s, on auto trader with 40,000miles for around a grand and from what i\'ve seen seem a good price!?

Not interested in a convertible. Think I would go with the egi, unless having a T2 makes the conversion easier later on???

I really couldnt say on the conversion front, but if you plan to use it day to day then go for EGI urely for the economy.  But a 40k car for a grand is an absolute bargain!  As always check then for rot, the TII\'s go the worst.

Rich, I\'ve had/have them all.

If you are looking for a daily driver, I found the EGi (non Turbo) was just as bad on the gas as the T2...    saying that, it was just as much fun though...

The Egi can also be easily converted to have the FD Twin Turbo engine!  ;)

My advise, if you don\'t mind the speed/boost aspect of it.. and just really want a rotor runner and something to give you some good mileage use without dying and problems.. get an Egi, alot cheaper and there\'s more chance of getting a good one that should last you awhile..

The one thing and main thing about the 2nd gen though, is \'RuSt\'... they are masters of this.... thats the first thing to look for, everything else is not a problem as spares are giving away for these cars.. unlike the chassis bits

This is what I\'m thinking, and as you say its straight forward for the conversion later, seems the best bet! Then I\'ll have 2 quick RX7\'s :cool  :evillaugh  :evillaugh

Just need to sell my current runaround- Ford Puma (I know, I know.... )

Dom- You got some pics of yours?? Would like to see the bay with twins!!

Whats involved in the swap?? Its along way off but would like to know what I\'m letting myself in for!! :rollin

If you\'re going to be using the car for drifting why wouldn\'t you go with the TII? That way you get the turbo lump, bigger brakes and LSD.

sadgoth

whether you\'d need to put the REW in is another question, the 13bT from the TII has a bit of grunt and with the right porting and ancillaries could give the 13bREW with a single conversion a run for its money!

- Dom, did u get my email btw??? - back on topic

there are a few TIIs here which are running the 13bT block (ported with big turbos) with stupid power (370 - 450bhp) in Aus there are quite a few with stupid power.

as mentioned Rust is the killer of the 2nd gen, check the floor and sills very carefully!

^^^ what the others said, but:

If you want a drifty project i would go for turboII. These have an LSD which is essential for drifting :) Im currently building/finishing a drifty/track EGi (Custom prop and turboII rear end). dont forget you will need DTSS eliminators (rear steer) for drift too! :)

Oh and check for rot ;)

Thanks for the advice guys! All helpful :chat

Think what I said has been misunderstood a little :)

I understand the T2 has the better spec- turbo, LSD, Brakes, etc....

But I would plan to put the twin turbo set up from my Gen3 in... and then other bits and bobs, like the brakes, etc would follow.
It would be the little bro car gettin\' the hand me downs!!

Then my gen3 would recieve the single, porting and generally lots of new shiny bits!! :evillaugh  :evillaugh

Think I could live with out the turbo boost for a little bit as a run around. Plus would give me time to save for new bits and setup things like the suspension.

Bandit- DTSS eliminators- rear steer?? Do all gen2\'s have this?? Whats involved to get rid??

 :cheers guys, appreciate it!

All gen2s have it and it sucks ;)

just replace 2 bushings and you have it eliminated :)

I got mine from here:

http://www.mmr-direct.com/catalog/RX7FC/index.htm

(Listed as DTSS Eliminators)

and as you can see theyre dead cheap! and all there other bushings arent bad either, just about to order a whole batch of front and rear control arm bushings meself!

Yippee-ki-yay!!

Ok, as far as I\'m aware theres no difference between the brakes on an EGi or a T2, if there is then its very well hidden!  As for the LSD, very few actually have one, even fewer have one thats still in good nick!
The rear steer only becomes a problem at speeds above 120mph, I\'ve no experince of the problems its said to cause when drifting, but then I only do the occasional power slide ;)
In terms of handling the biggest issue you will find is that the shocks will no doubt be pretty tired, this can lead to a disturbing body wander under acceleration and deceleration.
An egi should be less of a rust problem too, they have a slightly thicker floor pan iirc. :)

Base models got vented 9.8 inch dics with single piston iron calipers at the front and solid 10.3 inch discs with single piston calipers at the rear. The Turbo (and some upgrade models) were fitted with vented 10.9 inch dics with 4 piston calipers up front and vented 10.7 inch discs with single piston calipers on the rear.

I was under the impression all the Turbo models were fitted with a LSD :xconfused but I could be wrong.
