Hi guys,

I am looking to buy an RX7 early next year, however my mates Supra is growing on me (still not enough to change my mind). I guess I need some stats on performance between the both of them so I know I can beat him if he gives it some  ;)  So just two quick questions...

1. What is the 0-60 and 1/4 mile for both the RX7 and Supra when stock?

2. My mate with the Supra is thinking of going Big Single on his car and is aiming for 550bhp... Now if I get a RX, what kind of power figures would I need to keep up or beat his Supra\'s performace at that level?

Thanks
Kash

p.s. awesome forum  :D

rx jamie

less than 550 bhp to beat a huuuuuuuuge heavy supra thats for sure

Sy.

stock times i guess are 5/6 seconds 0-60 .
Guess at 1/4 mile - stock 14.5+

Supra\'s are heavy .

Had a top-speed-run against a mostly standard Supra @ Brunters (my rex is a little fettled but nothing huge) and he wasn\'t as quick to get going and was much slower in the corners but we hit the same top speeds.  Knowing that the 280bhp claim for Supras is twaddle and they\'re more like 320, my rex was putting down 293rwhp the day before when it was mapped (so close to 350bhp fly wheel) you\'d think the supra was more grunty that it was.  Mian problem I had was the 7\'s standard intercooler isn\'t up to much on a hot day and I was seeing 77C intake temps!!!

On a cooler day (or with my new front mount intercooler) it\'d be a very different story...

Aside from the performace the Rex defo wins on looks  :D

I do like the Supra but think the looks are a bit dated now.

Stock Jap Fd RZ 0-60 4.9, 1/4 mile 14 secs
Stock Lardarse  RZTT   0-60 4.9 1/4 mile 13.5secs
Both stock you will struggle their midrange will blow you away :(
Good news is when he comes to getting his so-called 550bhp it will cost him 10+K [if his engine will take it chances are it will need a re-build] to produce low 4\'s for the 0-60 and 12sec 1/4
You will need 500ish to whop him Low 4\'s for the 60 and into the 11\'s [if you can drive] for the 1/4 at a cost of including a re-build of 7k + the cost of all the drive train bits
Note: that is if you can find an RZ :(
Dont underestimate the Supra, might be c##p as a track car but in a straight fight you will struggle.

Supra has more tourque, but is heavier. Their gear ratios are shorter as the fd gear ratio\'s are prety long. The RZ had a shorter ratio than other RX-7\'s so thats why it was quicker to 60mph the other models are probably low 5\'s.

RX-7\'s have 255bhp from 1992-1995 265bhp from 1996 -1999/9 and from then on only the R, RS and Spirit R had 280bhp.

If 0-60 timing gear was any good at last event I went to you dont need a lot of extra mods to get a rex in the 4\'s :D varied between 4.36-4.8. (you will for 11\'s tho!)

My mate has a supra, few mods, im beating him at the mo at 1/4\'s, got him in the first 2 gears, but like John said their midrange is strong so it does tend to even up i.e not making any more ground on him.

On the road say when your already travelling at speed, it will be very close, we never seem to pull away from each other

BlitzBoy

you will only need 450hp at the wheels to beat a Supra with 550hp in the quarter mile.

But Supras are very strong top End hard to beat.

Depends if you like to go round corners, this is where the RX7 OWNS the Supra hands down, seen too many Jap car battle videos where the Rx7 creams the Supra

I\'ve had 2 Mkiv Supra\'s awhile back before the Rex\'s..

 Hmm, where to start?
Both cars Pound for pound, stock for stock... The Supra wins hands down, sorry it\'s the truth.  Naturally not that much really between them.
The Supra even feels to pull harder through the gears, and smoother.  (stock)

They are both very tail happy because of the power.... The Supra more sooo, there was an incident almost monthly with some member in the club losing the back end and smashing it.
But saying this, it was controlable if caught in time!

Modding, the Supra got alot more gains and bhp with basic upgrades.. decat, exhaust, filters, boost increase etc..
And also with these mods and others, the engine was still pratically bullerproof.   And this is even without touching the ECU.. you could throw 100bhp at the car without upgrading the ecu.
You will certainly not get away with that on a Rotary!

Alot of the guys have gone with big singles.. And are still running the standard ECU and injectors!!!!  All safe...

Forget the rubbish about the Supra is \'heavier\'..  Cause it has a motor that carries that weight well.  ;)   Also it is extremly nimble and easy to throw around and control...

Size, the Supra is bigger inside and out.... alot more room inside the car! Interiors are very good and modern .. \'have you seen a Skyline\'s?\'

Looks and Style, will thats up to the individual... they are surely the 2 best looking affordable sports cars on the market.

Problems, Couple cam belts have snapped, caught one of mine holding by a couple strands, just in time. (£600 to put right at Toyota)
Couple head gaskets blown.  Biggest problem was the Turbos used to blow/shatter...   Rest of the car is bomb proof..   Gearbox, even the Autos will handle 800+bhp thrown at it!

I may sound bias, but honestly, I\'m still green with the 7\'s, hence why I can offer more with the Supra.  I suppose you can read on here about the 7\'s and get some ideas on these machines.

Saying all what I have said above, I don\'t think I will go back to the Supra\'s, I am learning the 7\'s and loving it, even though it\'s costly  :p

My suggestion is for you to try before you buy....... They are both very similar cars with similar power and similar entertainment value! :wiggle

 Good Luck..

Supra, nice interior??  Never heard that before   :p

I\'ve driven both models and have to say I find the Supra heavy in the way it handles and harder to catch when the tail comes out, as it\'s got more back end momentum.

Supra also feels big and doesn\'t cosset you like an RX-7.

Don\'t get me wrong, I like Supras too and they\'re very strong cars. Pistons are good for 600 bhp and the standard crank will take 800 bhp (As explained to me by HKS\'s top engine builder whilst we were interviewing him about an HKS drag Supra he was building).

But the inherrent lack of weight from having a rotary up front rather than a 3 litre straight 6, means the RX-7 is a lot more nimble in reality.

With no pistons, camshafts, etc, etc. the RX-7 is much cheaper to tune too. Well, up to around 450 bhp, beyond that it starts getting VERY expensive.

RX-7\'s aren\'t really at their best drag racing though. Give me a track with curves over a straight piece of road any time - if I\'m at the wheel of an RX-7...IMHO.

Drag racing puts me to sleep....

before i took my rex off the road it was running 300 @ the wheels without the 75 jets and my mates supra had 420 @ the flywheel. we were always neck and neck. although he always had me in first and second because i was just left snaking around until i got the power down.

I drove a mates 380bhp Supra TT 6-speed to JAE this year (my rex was off the road) and TBH I really didn\'t like it compared to my rex. It just felt more like a lardy GT car than an out-and-out sports car like the Rex. So much so that I think it would suit the autobox better.

It just felt more heavy and less nimbe, and I don\'t like the interior much either.

Power was nice and grunty, with nice midrange pull, but ultimately didn\'t feel as quick as my 7 (which was around 340bhp before taking it off the road for a rebuild). My car should be around 360 now, when it\'s run-in and mapped. From driving his, I have no doubt I\'ll be able to cream him, at least up to stupid speeds. I think top-speed stuff will be similar though.

im sure some of you have seen this pic before but it pretty much explains everything between the 2 fantastic cars and more
