Does anyone here use Tracker or a similar service ?

What are the costs ?

There are various levels, monitor, retrieve, horizon then you\'ve got Navtrack, etc an their versious.

Assuming you are after a cheap option to keep the insurance happy one of the guys on scoobynet installs them cheaply, see this thread which gives some sort of idea at price.  The guy who bought my Impreza works for Navtrack (so it has both that and a tracker fitted, not a good car to steal ;) ) but the company don\'t offer much in the way of employee introductory discount (IIRC 25 quid) so don\'t know of anywhere to get them cheap.

Hi mate,

I use the rac trackstar. Pretty good. If I get my car jacked up and they call me to make sure it\'s not being stolen.

I need one (maybe) for peace of mind, not for insurance.

Cost may be a killer in the end, but we\'ll see.

I\'m going for a Tracker Horizon myself. The cost seems high but I recently had a rover 220 turbo coupe stolen. The thug just took it to a car park a trashed the nuts off until the turbo gave up. Hence my need for an RX7.

My only regret was that the sod in question has still not been caught. The tracker horizon is one of these active trackers. Tracker will phone if they think the car has been stolen. The costs are around £750 with an annual bill on top of that. I will get a quote when I go a view my car tomorrow and keep you all posted on how it breaks down.

In my opinion this is money well spent as it might help catch the next git that takes my car. I can then get his name and address and pay a personal visit.

Right then...
A tracker horizon is going to set me back £699 fully fitted at my place of work (want to keep them away from the house - just to be sure). then annual charge is £102. The horizon system is a GPS tracker which means that Tracker phone me when they think the car has been stolen. This is similar to a credit card company monitoring your spending habits and if it changes suddenly then they stop the card. Clever stuff. If the car is confirmed nicked then they inform the police of it\'s exact location that is unless it has been placed inside a metal container. This is a favorite trick for higher end theives who steal to order. the car is then transported in the container until the tracker can be deactivated.

The guy who will fit this system for me told me of another - recently relesed system call sattrak that works with a pay as you go sim card. This is cheaper @£499 and will text upto 5 phones when the car has been taken. You can listen in on conversations in the car and it will text it\'s GPS location too. It has a secondary immobiliser (as the guys have taken your keys to get passed the expensive cat1 you\'ve had recently fitted) so you can text the car and use the secondary immobiliser to prevent the car from starting again once stopped. you can then go a pick it up! The one big disadvantage with this is that is doesn\'t directly involve the law!

I\'ve spoken with the local traffic cops and the crime prevention officer regarding trackers and the resource applied to recovering stolen cars in general. I guess like speed cameras, if it\'s handed on a plate to them they will do something rather than wait around until a flaming wreck is reported is some car park somewhere. The quality of information they say is vital in recovering a stolen car.

For my money I will get the tracker Horizon and leave it to the boys in blue. The best I can do is to provide them with the means to acurratly trace the car so I might get it back and catch the sods responsible.

hope this help y\'all!;)

PS the sat trak system has now annual charge except top up credit on the sim card!
:cool
