Hiya fellow FC Owners

i have recently bought a 1988 Cab with some exhaust issues

i have taken the system off and in the process , snapped the split air pipe ( or what ever it is called )

Now then - being an 88 - do i actually need it ?? ( for Mr MOT guy ? )

i would like to keep it on - as the car had it on when i got it :)

they say a pics tell a thousand words - so have a look

but can anyone suggest the best way forward ??

i would like to weld a pipe into the hole , then from this put a piece of pipe from that to the air pipe - BUT - will the pipe melt with the heat of the exhaust ?? or will i struggle to do this anyway as the pipe is that small anyways ??

Ta

Stu

Weld it back on mate, if you\'ve got it, use it :)

Yep - weld it up. Should be ok.

It\'s the elephant I feel sorry for, poor little bugger.

Well what i would do (as its rusted) find a strip of metal say 1/2" wide (don\'t matter how long under 2") then some long nose pliers. Grip the strip of metal right at the end and roll it around the Pliers so you make a tube.

Now make the Tube roughly slightly bigger than the broken pipe, then cut of the excess metal with some Snips. you my need to adjust the cut end to make it round again (long nose pliers again!) now if you gently squeeze the little pipe you will be able to make it a push into the broken pipe with half of it stuck out, effectively making a sleeve.

Now you can carefully push the other end of the broken pipe on so the little pipe you have just made is half in the Exhaust and half in the Air pipe. so the new pipe is holding the show together.

Now the Tricky bit is to not quite close the gap between the two pipes up and gently clean the two broken ends. Then weld it up using small tacks on the edge of the broken pipe (so you stick it to the new pipe) if you just weld it up as usual all it will do is blow holes as the metal is very thin. Basically the new pipe does a few jobs it holds it all together, gives you something strong to weld too and sleeves the joint..

Stu, Is that your every day car in the pic? :D

thanks chaps

i wondered how many replies would be about the crap on the patio !!

chris - thats EXACTLY what i was thinking - i just dont want to snap it again when trying to put it back on :(

what i was thinking was...

1 - make a sleeve ( tube ) up
2 - stick that in the hole in the exhaust - and tack it on
3 - get a piece of rubber pipe
4 - slide that onto the pipe
5 - stick exhaust back on car
6 - shove the air pipe into rubber pipe
7 - secure with jubliee clips

what you say chris is spot on - BUT - how do i know i have the pipe in the same place so that the other end connects to the pipe on the engine ( unless you mean DONT weld the air pipe to the new pipe - just slip it inside ??

Well its usaly easy. look at the shape of the end of the broken pipe, the two bits should match up.

I would weld it though, if you jubliee clip it you\'ll find it will leak.(heat will melt the rubber pipe)

You can of course weld the pipe up fit it too the car loosly then tack a bit of bar etc from the air pipe to the exhaust to stop it flexing.

Now why didnt i think of that !! ??

i will have to have a closer look really - i suppose if i get it in the GENRERAL direction it should be OK ( he says !! LOL )
