i\'m not sure whether the car I looked at today is a nail or not. It\'s a D reg FC N/A with 106K on the clock. (original engine, not rebuilt)

Started up first time, but the owner had to keep tapping the gas to stop it from stalling. After a few mins though the idle seemed to sortt itself out and car felt .... ok

I can\'t really comment on much else as it s the first FC i\'ve ever been in but is it likely to be worth £600 if the bodywork is in reasonable nick? It has an MOT til Jan but no tax now. Gearbox felt good.

I supose its like any car, 100k is a lot of miles but it depends on how its been treated and how you will treat it? if your a "Driving miss Daisy" kind of person it may go on for years to come but if you are looking for Trackday car it may not be the best Choice.

The thing is with second gen NA\'s there easy to work on and there are plenty of second hand parts about. Off the top of my head i can think of three NA engines for sale? and they are usaly reasonable money?

are the cold starting dodgy idle levels a worry leading to bad engine?

grinder

your best checking if it actaully starts OK - the idle can be adjusted

run it for 20 mins ( or drive it )

then stop the car - if it starts OK then thats a good sign

my NA had about 115K on the clock and ran OK ( it drank oil like i had shares in shell but thats a different story )

is it the silver one with full body kit on ebay ??

I seem to remember someone writing a bit of a Buyers guide for Sevens?

Brett

Check if it starts from warm ok. But with over 100k on the clock you are heading into poor compression territory.  Do you have a budget in mind?  Its better to spend a few hundred extra and get a car with less miles.  :D

From my experience, in the past 6 months I have owned several of these second gen\'s and prolly checked out over a dozen cars in this past 6mths and the one thing and main/only thing to be aware of is the \'Body work\'!
 The bodywork/chassis, fullstop!

These cars are rotters, they corrode easily. It may also look superficial and assume it\'s surface corrosion or a small hole.. wrong, 9 out of 10 small holes lead to massive openings or worst.....

My theory is, you can always change/rebuild an engine or get mechanical parts replaced, but you cannot replace a chassis, once there is corrosion, there WILL BE corrosion...

rust is a killer - if you like the car and want it - really really really check the underside

once you have done that - check again

i had 5*10p sized holes in mine - 20 plates it took me to weld her back up - it had gone from the front to back - both sides - inside and out ( and the spare wheel well )

you really need to check

failing that - buy it - and sell me the front bumper :)

i think the £600 is a bit high for a D reg car - but the bumper(s) could be worth a few quid !!

what everyone said about rust applies to me too, bought a T2 and it was pretty rusty. Its sorted now (i hope) take a screw driver and give it a prod underneath, i didnt do this and did the "tapping with knuckles" i saw a couple of spots which were questionable then when i had a really really good look it was all rotten on the edges where the floor meetsw teh sills, and behind the wheel arch liners, get a good luck there yeh, dont go in your best clothes!

thebandit

I agree with all of the above. Look out for rust! The rear arches/quarters on my Egi were fooked. Needless to say im pretty handy at killing the stuff these days when i turn into "rust warrior"  :rollin
