Can anyone tell me what power a standard T2 engine and gearbox can take with out to much strain

Glenn Butcher

Hi RX Rich,

Depending on how old the engine is and the condition of it - it will really only be safe up to 1BAR of boost (with a good tune!!!).

Above that and things can start to fail - the most common is a cracked rear end plate (dowelling helps this).

Gearboxes are surprisingly strong, and unless you are running slicks at the drags I doubt you would break one in a hurry.
Thanks,

Depends on your pocket and what you want to do with the car.  At somewhere between 230 and 250HP you start to hit limitations of the OEM system and the costs and work start to mount.

If you can do the work yourself there is no reason why you cannot get 300 reliable HP for not too much (1000 or so), but if you have to pay for everything then it quickly mounts up.

And as noted, if the engine has 80K on without a rebuild, forget upping it until you have.

thanks for the help im thinking of running about 400bhp maybe a bit more.

what work is needed for a safe 300bhp?full exhaust , fmic , boost controller , fuel cut defencer, and intake? anything else

Dont skimp - get a decent fuel system and ECU if you\'re going to shoot for 400 in the future.

Expect the worst if you play about with the cars breathing and dont make provision for adjustment to the motors fuel/ingition requirements...

This is where I differ from most. I use the Megasquirt DIY computer, so have no truck with most of the aftermarket gear, although I do like Motec and Pectel.

For 400HP you really need to go end to end through your system and improve everything. Personally I would start with a fresh engine. You will then need new turbo and manifolds, IC, fuel system, exhaust and preferably inlet. Again personal, but I don\'t like the stock inlet. I know it flows enough for the power, but Individual runner setups are the thing for me.

Better clutch of course. Uprated brakes. Chassis work.

And then the tuning. Again here I differ as I tune my own stuff. Its not difficult it just takes time, patience and a bit of thought. Oh and a wideband lambda.

I reckon I could do a 400HP engine setup for around 2,500. But I got lucky on things like the block. Hate to think what it would cost as a turnkey package.

What are you including in your £2.5K Bill???

You could piss that away on a single turbo kit easily! £500-£1000 for a real nice fuel system. What about management?

Everything. I do things ermm differently. ECU is only £100 that hopes. I collect injectors so have never paid more than a box of jelly babies for them.

Might be 2.6K if I go fly by wire on throttles and wastegate. 2.7K if I put a digidash on as well.

Differently?! Stuff still costs money?

Fair enough, if u have a load of sh*t hanging about in your garage redundant then thats a bit different and things like "But I got lucky on things like the block" kind of helps! For normal peeps on here reality is 400RWHP is more like £5K...

Damn, I could have a 600hp single turbo for nothing based on your math - ok, I have a spare 20B, a spare GT42, a spare fuel system etc etc (etc etc!) on the floor sat about doing nothing already but...?

:D

When is the Wesite gonna be done dusted and tearing up tarmac btw?

I work at co-ordsport so my discount on HKS,cusco and other bits all helps but i know its still a long road ahead thanks for the help;)

Westy..Ah yes, was meant to go out and start redressing the engine last night and couldn\'t raise the energy. I\'ll try again on friday. Been having to baby sit a lot as garage is some way from house so can\'t really sneak out when SWMBO is out.

Sure stuff costs, but if you are willing to take some time to sort it out and have the inclination to learn about what is needed it can be done on a shoestring.

For example. A friend who is building  a Turbo se7en (got the other cheap block) scored a T04 for 350. He has a network of friends that included nuclear qualified welders so can get Top quality manifolds made in return for other favours. His father owning a model shop helps of course.

A lot of us work this way. Its slower than heading out on the turn key route, but far more satisfying in the long run.

And of course if you drop your sights to 350HP you can use a ported factory manifold and hybrid OEM turbo, which drops that cost considerably.

Some time I\'ll share why intercoolers are a bad idea :-)
