Guys,

Had my car since Nov and wasnt really prepared for how hot these cars really get.

Over the last few weeks I have seen intake temps on the FC Commander of 70 degrees when the car has been left anywhere whether in direct sunlight or not. Once you get moving this goes down but not quite as quickly as I thought or hoped.

Sitting in the queue for Santa Pod also had the intake temps soar but luckily I didnt have the Commander showing me the intake temps otherwise I would have cried !!

So.......rather than have this next year when summer comes I am beginnning to formulate a plan for the car.

Will changing to a Front Mounted intercooler such as the Greddy kit (is this the best to go for and easy to fit?) and water injection make a significant difference ?

I am guessing that it probably isnt the best idea to fit a nitrous spraybar to the standard Intercooler ?!!!!!?

Gonna plan to have it done by april / may so I have plenty of time to get christmas / car insurance / tax service etc out the way.

Also by doing the intercooler and water injection will I need to uprate the fuel pump and injectors too ?

Cheers for any advice,

Gareth

water injection is a must for these cars/front mount or charge cooler will also help intake temps will only drop on the move if u are planning for 1/4 mile use mainly i wld go for chargecooler and water..if for the road and some 1/4 or track then go for front mount and water..on the move yesterday my intake air temps on cruise were 45deg but water soon cools this down..budget for good fuel pump and poss 1300 secondaries and remap to get the best from this set up

70oC is high. Ive only ever seen it go above that once and that was with the right foot planted. my tip for the pod is to push your car til your close to the starting line up. most people do this with the bonnet up, let heat escape....

Water Injection is definately the way to go IMO

Do you have an aftermarket induction kit ? The amount of hot air these suck in surprised me when we compared intake temps on the trip to the Ring. AndyP was getting high 80s yet with the standard enclosed induction plus a K&N I would register no higher than mid 50s, mine is normal 38 - 50. I do have a slightly larger intercooler in the stock mount (courtesy of Clive). To fully maximise intake temps you probably want to look at :

Enclosed induction system
Water Injection
FMIC
Intercooler water or CO2 spraybar

In that order I\'d guess.

Maybe Honda Jazz or Polo GTi in the offing...

Has anyone seen the CRYO2 cooling system?
It is a modular system with about four different sections, all based around using a tank of CO2 to keep stuff cool. I got some info about it from a stand at JAE, ill find out who made it when i have a look at the bumf i have at home.

It basically used a continuous flow of CO2 which first cooled air intake pipe, then cooled fuel lines, then a different intake pipe, and what was left over was spayed straight onto the intercooler, it looked really cool!

I have no idea how much it was but it looked like a serious system.

Good tips for the Pod.

However I meant that I was sitting in the traffic waiting to go in !!!!!!!

Not really interested in 1/4 mile etc wouldnt mind the odd trackday.

The main reason I want to do the mods if for reliability.

Cheers for your advice,

One problem with the FMIC is it will restrict air flow to your [newly repositioned] rad, hi inlet temps are bad, hi water temps are worse
If you are making a plan for mods and you want reliability I would suggest:

1 Charge cooler [means you leave the stock rad where Mazda wanted it]
2 Low cost WI [for those high boost moments :D ]
3 Inclosed forced air induction kit
4 uprated fuel pump and 1300 injectors

I would only do the above provided the engine was in good enough condition to take increased load, if not I would spend my money on a refresh.

Having had a CC for over a year now I have never seen more than 50c and that would be a very hot day where the car has been standing as soon as it has been started the temps drop quite quickly even before you are moving, motorway crusing avarage inlet temps are 35ish dependant on ambiant air temp, night time, spring - autum can see low 20\'s. On high boost [prior to WI] I would see 40 -45 with WI on sustained hi boost [1bar] it will drop to 19\'s after about 20secs :bandit .

Thats cool, I bought my car from Andrew at Jimmys. He rebuilds them all before he sells them. Therefore the engine has been refreshed.

How much are Charge Coolers ? Not seen one before.

I am using a stock Airbox with a K and N panel filter at the mo, should I change this ?

Presumably with the uprated fueling and injectors the ecu will need to be mapped ?

Sorry for all the questions,

Gareth

I know REworx sell them, have a look on the website for prices, they are quite reasonable compared to a FMIC, also Forge motorsport make them [dont know how good they are, but the Cossie boys use em] again have a look on the web.

You would do better to lose the stock air box and go for an enclosed filter ducted to fresh air and join the the 2 turbo supplies together to go onto the filter from the other side [make sure you get a large enough filter, FD\'s suck in loads of air :guinness ]

Yes you are quite right mapping would be required, even by just fitting a better IC you would need to anyway.
