hi there!
this is my first post, not my last :)

im currently suffering the grp20 hell that is the FTO, im 23 with 3yr ncb (4 in december) also tax is stupidly high at 96£ a half year!

so this brings me onto the rx7, drop dead sexy and i\'ve always wanted one, but im being told to many things.
first off...roat tax. is it classed at 1.3l rating?
insurance? good, bad...run away?
fuel... 15mpg true? (my fto is about 26mpg, 2.0 V6, about 20£ will get me 140miles if i granny it)

the rotor tip wear thing aint an issue as ill get one that been serviced and such, but i just wanted those few things answered before i take the plunge and go for a twin turbo gen3.

thank you for your time!  :D

Hi Mate and welcome :D

Insurance is still grp 20 :(
Fuel: full tank [65ltrs] expect max 300miles, more like 220 -250
Engines tend to last 50+k miles before needing a re-build expect £2-3K if engine is still running more if it goes pop, not as bad as a rebuild on a boinger though.
The road tax thing: When the RX7fd was first sold in this country the wonderfull DVLA  decided that although the displacement is 1300cc they scheduled it as a 2600   this is because we get twice as many cycles as a boinger.
Some imports slip in as 1.3, but when you consider the difference [road tax] and put it into perspective it amounts to about a tank of fuel.

Most cars are taxed as a 2.6 (twin rotor = 1.3 x 2)
Insurance can vary greatly. Get a couple of qoutes before you even think about buying.
Fuel.. from what I understand, anything for 12 (booting) to a max of 18-20 I think if you treat her nicely!

Think carefullly and read as much of this forum as you can to understand the costs involved. If you are struggling to pay for your FTO I would doubt you could afford to run an FD.

If you don\'t know anything about Rotarys, always, ALWAYS take someone who knows what a normal Rx7 should sound and feel like!

I didn\'t and I had a 3 grand rebuild a month afterward! Even though it felt okay to me when I test drove it.

Hi,

Now I don\'t want to put a downer on anything, but if you\'re struggling (or begrudging) to pay to run an FTO, then you probably shouldn\'t be considering a 3rd gen rx7:( unless you can justify spending money on an rx and not on an fto. Insurance is a killer, i\'m over 25 and i still find it hard to find a decent quote (i.e. less than £1k), especially when i only want to use it to drive to trackdays and maybe a couple of shows (less than 3k a year)

Good luck with whatever you choose, if it is an FD then I\'m sure you\'ll be a very happy man:D

Mine was regestered as a 1308  :chat  got to be insured as a 2.6 though. Each rotor is 654 x 2 = 1308cc but twice as many cycles so someone decided it should be a 2.6.

Petrol is a killer! running costs are very high! service isn\'t that bad but needs to be done regulary with decent oil and always run on optimax.

Good luck.

Got to agree, I thought it wouldnt be too bad running the rex but with petrol prices at about £1 a litre = £60 a tank of fuel lasting hardly any time at all it definately gets expensive. FTO should be relatively cheap to run compared to these and I wouldnt recommend 1 unless they fancy some big bills :( Shame really as its 1 of them cars everybody has to own at some point. I just thought fook it, only live once :) sell it if it gets too expensive :)

Forget about the cheap tax thingy. I\'m lucky enough to get away with cheap tax - my Rex is registered as a 1.3. But that £50~ saving could be spent in one day on fuel!

I don\'t know how you\'re going to get on with insurance - best to get "firm" quotes, not "website quotes", before you even think about buying a RX7.

On the point of buying a sh!tter - just like the guys have said, make sure you buy sensibly. Either from a reputable RX7 specialist - links at the top of the site. Or buy from someone on the forum. If you buy from a \'general car dealer\', or from eBay - expect to get bitten.

Cheers

lol   :rollin

I like to think that my Rex is enough to scare off the potential ball and chains.

Brett

^- Yeah I thought that.............

Slight Hijack,  is the FTO really group 20?  No offence intended, but how the hell can they class that as more of a risk than my Turbo II?

Hijack over :)

Guessing being Import might have something to do with it?

fro

the FTO GPX MI-VEC is group 20, all other FTOs are group 18.. as is a RX7 turbo 2 :)

Wolfy

its cause there is no crash test report for late model fto\'s. that and its a unofficial import with no uk spec available. bugger aint it.

Brett

Yep sounds like a bugger to me :)  Get yourself a nice TII and save on the insurance :D
