Aaaarghhhh, drooooool - thanks!

Would love a dedicated track set.

Out of interest, I am looking at the FEED FD above, do they run a v-mount setup because I can\'t see a big front mount?

Initial-D

The Feed Spirits FD runs a large front mount setup with ADVAN RS wheels (F9J-19 +22 ~ R10J-19 +25) the Feed Advan car also runs a large FMIC but I don\'t have the wheel specs for it, look to be 18"s.

Thanks for the pics Rextreme I spent ages scanning the double page ads from Option2 and photoshopping the creases out lol!
Cheers

The RX7 Magazine I have with feature on both FEED cars shows they also run a 30mm spacer on the rear of their cars.!

Last year they were recommending 18X10 +18 with a 30mm rear spacer at auto salon with 255x40x18 all round for track use on the time attack car. They also run a litle undersize tire for almost no sidewall flex. Feed Time attack car is 460ps soo not huge but decent power.
just a HKS GT3540 turbo with a FMIC, I dont think Vmount is be all and end all. but is very nice setup. Conventional setup doesnt give that bad performance when you run a radiator behind it thats about 3" thick!! They are well setup.

Feed spirits car with 19" rims has a boost up standard twin setup. 380hp
both run PFC.

.. no worries about pics. they have always been there, should have posted sooner, they are nice .

It does make me wonder what the optimal tyre/wheel setup is for the FD, I guess it\'s down to your power output and suspension/geometry settings plus anything else that makes a difference eh!

What issue RX-7 mag has that feature btw 2005 No25?

I should be replacing my suspension soon with a proper setup on some hard springs, then just need to upgrade the swaybar mounts - will leave the standard sway bars as I think the springs will be more than strong enough to stop roll. I like the idea of running smaller tires for reducing tire flex, I\'m running 275x40x18 on my 18x10s so I may try the 255x40x18 as its cheaper too lol! ;) You know what the fronts should be on 18x9s 235x40x18, 215x35x18 perhaps as Feeds are 20 smaller?

I think you\'d be better off with decent sway bars and the springs set not quite so hard (on the presumption that the car will be used predominantly on the road rather than being built for the track). This way you will retain better road manner but atill wont have a roll problem when cornering rather than if you just use the spring rate on their own for roll resistance. You may get bored (tired) of really hard springs on the road.

I would be inclined to speak to a chassis expert before randomly selecting spring rates/coilovers/tyres etc. Could save you a lot of cash and get you the car setup the way you want a lot quicker with much less trial and error. Its a complicated business! James\' recommended the guys that did his car I think, there are sure to be numerous people that could \'do a job\' on your FD and completely transform it...

If you put on springs that are too hard, the car may start jumping over bumps and give you less control at speed as well as loss in traction out of corners. A decent pair of thicker anti roll bars will virtually elliminate body roll on an FD3S.

Suspension tuning is an art that takes many years of experience, it\'s not a trial and error thing that you can find optimal settings for just by luck, IMHO.

As a rule of thumb, buy the best suspension coilovers you can afford from a specialist manufacturer who only makes suspension.

Aragosta or Ohlins are the best off the shelf. You can also get a set of hand built Bilstein coilovers that are better than Ohlins or Aragosta.. through Nishiki, where I had mine built....Not cheap, but worth every penny.

Initial-D

I\'m basically setting the car up in the same manner as the RE Amemiya touge car with the intention of using it for track days too, the fact I\'m only gonna run the car hard on the track makes me opt for a more track orientated setup. As long as the suspension has enough stroke for road usage I don\'t mind my teeth chattering!

Thanks for the info though Rich! I\'ll try the springs that come with coilovers before going full steam ahead with all the tweaking, otherwise I find you never feel the benefit from what you had before. Theres a motorsport garage down the road from me who can help me with all the setting work as they prep rally and formula cars.

Going for some Zeal coilovers BTW. If I upgrade the roll bars too what are the recomendations? Auto-exe look good with twice the thickness or maybe the racing beat ones? Not too bad price-wise if possible!

Miguel have you changed the front roll bar mount too or just the bars? What spring rates are you running? I\'m looking at 16 F and 18 R.

Yes ben,
Rx7 Mag no25.
Has the New Panspeed car on the cover.

I have been in Miguels car and it handles superbly for its road/track setup.
I dont think you would need much more. you can really work on your driving ability with a car setup like that.

I wouldnt go too skinny on tyres. depends on the brand too. some 255 are a few mm wider than others.

I think the expense of 18" wheels for track use are bit of overkill although looks are different.  17" rims on the track with S-tyres do the job. Not that many FD\'s run 18" rims in Japan.

Suspension tuning is personal also.
Pan speed run 255x40x17 AO48 ADVAN on light 17x9.5 rays CE28
Ohlins suspension with F16kg and R18kg springs
Seems to be a very good setup but the car is mega low.

Amemiya New Time attack car. yellow with porsche front.
only 17" enkei 17x9 front and 17x10rear same tyres
Quatum RE-A sus with 16kg f and 18kg rear spring rates.

You get a bit of ride with the 17 over the 18

Feed cars are 18kg front and rear and run 18" for display
Track in japan usually means 17" rims on the old FD.

Food for thought.

Initial-D

Yeah that was my basis only I\'d be on 18"s instead of 17"s!
I really wanted to have hard suspension so I can run the car low without risk of scraping on hard corners (my kit wouldn\'t like that)!

As said previously I wanted 16kg F and 18kg R on low sitting coilovers on 18"s with possibly slightly smaller S tires 225 F and 265 R to reduce wall flex. I wasn\'t sure what to do about the roll bars tho... replace them with harder ones, get a RE:A reinforcement bar to replace the standard front roll bar mount and keep standard roll bars? Do you know what Miguels setup is in that department?
Cheers

There are a few cars mentioned on this thread now, which one do you mean?

If it\'s the car relating to the title of the thread, I don\'t really have any work in progress pics, just plenty of the finished car :)

Initial-D

Sorry Chris, had a bit of a highjack on your thread eh!
