Hi all

I have finally got round to re-posistioning my apexi air filters on my FD.

I have been meaning to do this for a while now and whilst I have been installing my trust FMIC I thought I may as well get it done.

I thought of the idea when I was installing my angel eye lights I got from ebay, I noticed I had the FD which only had a single oil cooler, so the area under the drivers light was empty nad was begging to be filled..

I bought a couple of sets of alloy pipes and started to join them as needed to extend the filters to under the light area.
I extended the smaller pipes with silicon tubing.

I should now get nice cold air, directly to the filters I am also installing a Cwest front so the area will remain very open and will duct air straight to the air filters.

I cant take any pics from further back as my garage is quite small.

Anyway here are some pics of the install I am very happy with the result and the car seems to run better, but maybe thats just me thinking it does:)

Do you realise that if you make the inlet tract longer it alters the way the engine develops power.

Scott

I have a very short inlet tract

Tintin

You\'ll also have to clean your filters quite often as there going to get covered in crap , and they are going to get loads of cold air

sdminus is right though , I read something about this a while back , can\'t remeber the ins and outs , would be nice to see some dyno results in standard postion and relocated to see if it makes a big difference

Keep us posted , I\'m looking into ways to get colder air to the filters at the mo , wouldn\'t be practical for me to do this as I have two oil coolers but it might give me other ideas

I was aware sort of that it would do something along those lines but I have no concrete info on how it could effect the power.

Can you enlighten me, you seem to know what you are talking about were as I have just tried to get more cold air into the engine:) by extending the filter piping.
I was also worried about the filters getting dirty, but the posistion of them allows me to remove them quite easily and I only get the car out on sunny days, the rest of the time it sits in my garage.

Any info greatly appreciated, I would hate to fry my engine for the sake of some cool air.

All the air filter work is reverasable if it causes any problems, hopefully it wont but you never know.

The extentions ares about 12 inch\'s longer to the current posistion, the diamiter size remains constant.

I look forward to your reply guys.

I wanted to get it dyno\'d before and afger but once I started ripping things out I could not stop:)

Thanks

Tintin

If you ask your tuner nicely he may have a set of filters that you could possibly put on in stock location do a dyno run then pop yours back on and do another , don\'t know if this would work but if you can move your new piping out of the way to get the other filters in it should

Regarding damaging the engine , I\'m by no means an expert so don\'t take my word for this , but it should\'nt harm your engine , I relocated the filter on my Megane Coupe with no ill affects , I moved the filter to just in front of the passenger wheel , there was no opening directly in front of the filters but it was practically level with the bottom of the car so would suck the cold air up , I used to use the car in all weather and the filters used to get wet through sometimes , I was told this would cause problems but I never noticed any

Probably your biggest worry would be if a large stone hit one of the filters at speed it could put a hole in it and that could cause problems if you didn\'t notice

Hi again

I am going to get it booked in at WGT in the next few weeks, I need to put my apexi and commander in and finish my bumper, I am sure WGT will give it a try for me, they are very helpfull.

I will be placeing some mesh over the opening on either side of the cwest bumper  to stop any large debris getting through.

I shall see how it goes shortly, the bumper will take a few days to get sorted so I will post some finding once I have had it tested.

Thanks

When we did mine we took advise from Racing Beat. There are some figures that they give you regarding inlet tract length.
I am told that if you look at the 787b the inlet tract changes in length at certain rpm.
I am of the under standing that it alters the specific torque charactistics of the engine.
I look forward to seeing the dyno results.
I would think the filters will get filthy really quick. Mine do and they are in the engine baywith some cleaver ducting.

I am an offical K&N distributor, and have in stock there Apollo cold air filter. This probably the easiest way to get cold air feed to your turbo, I will have them on my stand at JAE

I\'m trying to do the same thing too at the min. Mine is sucking so much hot air my FMIC isn\'t too happy on temps. I\'ll get it booked back in with pip and set my boost controller to the same boost pressure and see what difference it makes. I would have thought making sure you turbo is getting a good cold feed is more improtant (waiting for flame).

I was thinking about this only today; I\'ve got a HKS induction kit, and after a 20 minute run including a quick thrash followed by a traffic jam, the filter body must have been ~60C. How is the air supposed to get to the filters normally, with a standard front? It struck me that running some hoses from the area where Eddie has put his filter into the engine bay would help without going to the effort of relocating the filters. Thoughts? The other line of attack of course is to put some heatshielding in.

Hi scott,
the inlet tract length is only really relevant from the plenum to engine.
On turbo cars it is not so important as for Naturally aspirated as in the case of the 26b.
The length of the inlets to the turbos should not really affect the power on Eddies car except for making the inlet charge a little cooler,as long as there are no additional restrictions in the pipework.

Yes, for example just think how much a front mount intercooler would change the inlet tract length.

Eddie

Hi Carl

Thanks for the input.

I have no additional restriction to the diamiter it remains constant with a couple of extra bends.

I am going to get the ECU fitted shortly and see what is happening with temps.

I was wondering if anyone can help with a high idle problem.

I have run the car for about 10 mins but my idle is high about 1200rpm.

The car idle\'d fine before I started messing:(

I have fitted a trust FMIC,
moved air filters, fixed a snapped vacume pipe, changed plugs and leads, oil, oil filter, moved battery.

Anyone advise if I should now adjust the idle screw, I thought what I had done from the list above espically the vacume pipe)would effect the idle which is why I thought it was now high, but I seem to be getting conflicting info.

any advise welcomed.

Thanks

Eddie

I have now fitted a Apexi and commander and have finally got the car running again after a long wait.
So I thought I would post up some air a dn water temps

With the car standing still in my garage running in the learning mode of the apexi which I did for about 40 mins I was seeing air temps of around 40. that was with a slight through draft in my garage and my garage door open.

When the car is running about town the highest I saw sat in trafic was 31, on the move it was mid 20\'s, water temps pottering around town are mid 80.

I have not really had the chance to put my foot down as I dont have access to a private road, so I think I will save that for when the car gets mapped on the rolling road, going to try and get it booked in at WGT soon.

Anyone enlighten me to avarage temps others a seeing?

Cheers

That sounds about the same as what im getting. You should see it stays pretty constant when you open the throttle up !

Sounds like you have done a great job !
