Does this sound even slightly sensible?

Hi all,

New around these parts :) I\'ve been drooling over RX7s ever since I can remember and since they\'ve come down in price so much (well for buying at least) I think it\'s time to consider a swap. Oh and my friend swapping his Probe for an RX7 didn\'t help either ;)

I don\'t drive anywhere very much so even my daily driver really isn\'t as such. I was planning on buying a fairly cheap example, providing all the required stuff is up to scratch like body work etc etc. I know a couple of people that would be quite happy to help with doing an engine rebuild (it\'s the only way you learn right?) and I\'m really not bothered about being off the road for a long while.

I think this would allow to get a fairly decent car and do a lot of learning with a rebuild. I\'ve always ended up getting my cars resprayed as well so providing there\'s no rust the bodywork isn\'t that important either.

What does everyone think? Or do you all think I\'m completely mad ;)

Cheers,

Paul.

I had the same school of thought as you when i bought mine (ie bodywork fine, ran a bit rough etc for cheap money).  thought i\'d be able to sort out all the mechanicals myself fairly cheaply...

The car has ended up costing me a fortune with it\'s recent rebuild.  In my opinion, you would be best off saving up for a recently rebuilt one, rather than waiting for it to go "BANG".

Cheers
Jon

Well I\'ll wait and see what my friend ends up doing as he bought one which seemed ok but has ended up needing a rebuild which he\'s doing with the help of friends. Then again I did see Carl at Hayward Rotaries had an advert for a rebuilt engine for £750 which is very cheap so I\'ll wait and see how much I can get together when the Probe gets sold.

Cheers for the info :)

The engine that  had advertised is not for the 3rd gen RX7 I am sorry to say but an earlier RX7.
The engines for the 3rd gens are alot more money to rebuild by one of the tuners, but the prices do vary as do the specifications of build. You get what you pay for as they say.
If you have a fair mechanical knowledge though and have worked on other engines there should be no reason why you cannot do the work yourself,I am allways willing to try to help if anyone get\'s stuck.
Regards
Carl

Hi Paul, i had a 24v Probe and quite liked it for a year or two, they have very flexible and smooth engines, and you can potter along at 30mph in 5th gear! but compared to an RX7 they are like a toy, i searched for a long time to get the car i wanted , silver type X,i  bought it knowing it needed a rebuild, and with the intention of doing the rebuild myself,  (water seals had gone) but in the end i got an expert to do it for me,
Good luck with your search for one, i know you will be happy with it when you get it!

Thanks for the info Carl, I\'ll bear in mind.

ro284: Yep, it\'s a lot of effort to get them quick. We have a 300+whp supercharged 24V in the club, plus there\'s a few 300+whp turboed cars in the States....one pushing 398whp on stock internals   Nice torque on them and they\'re a great cruiser. But it\'s all going through the front wheels for one and it\'s far too much hassle for me at the moment. I\'ll be quite happy with a stock RX7 for now (cos it\'s not like I\'ll be able to stay standard ;) )
